Hey guys, I have the N3DS and I honestly haven't touched it since summer of last year. I installed cakes CFW and was successful but life got in the way and I've ignored it. Now I'm in a better place and I am reading that Luma is the Go-to CFW for Dragon Quest VIII and I'm wanting to change over to it but I can't even begin to tell you what I had installed on it so I am going to attempt to explain on here so maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I can't believe I have forgotten most of the terminology concerning this so please, bear with me. All I can tell you is that I do have backups of the Nand in various folders when I was getting this thing installed last year.
When I boot my 3ds, I have to hold the L button as I boot and it boots to a boot entry menu that has "cakesFW" and "HomeBrewMenu" as my choices.
Going into "CakesFW" takes me my "Emunand" (?) when I can play around with homebrew, emulators and the like.
Is there a way to somehow install Luma over this? I assume it's not as easy as deleting all the contents of the SD card and extracting the contents of a Luma zip file onto it, right? If it's not as easy as that, is there a laymans tutorial on how to go back to a vanilla 3DS and finding a Luma tutorial somewhere? Alternatively, can I simply just use different SD card and install different CFW on there?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Follow 3ds.guide

You are using menuhax. Simply follow the whole guide, and then when it comes time to flash your nand backup, flash your emunand backup over sysnand with hourglass9.

The step I'm talking about is pretty far into the guide and titled "Section IV - Restoring the System"

This guide will set up arm9loaderhax with luma. Arm9loaderhax is kind of like boot2 for the wii (if you know what that is). Basically it will give you brick protection and almost full control over the system.

(You can keep menuhax, but I don't advise it. Follow the guide that I linked.)

I have old "multiple attempt" folders where I tried different things to originally get this working, is there a file verification program for these NAND files? I have the original one, and a mislabeled flashed one. Multiple copies of each. So I don't want to leave anything to chance and use the wrong file.

Backup everything on your sd card, and then delete all of the contents - and start from scratch with this guide. Don't format your sd card though, as the emunand partition needs to be preserved. When you get to the step in the guide that prompts you to make a nand backup, make sure to also make an emunand backup.
