So I was talking about this in the IRC chat when GBATemp was down but might as well make a post here now that I know all the details about the 3DS just to make sure that ya'll agree on whether there's anything that can be done or can't.
Note that this is not my O3DS, and I do not know this guy so I am only going by what he has told me so far:
He downgraded to 2.1. Instead of proceeding to install A9LH, he updated to 4.x with Ocarina of Time. Then, he updated to 6.x with Omega Ruby. This is because system update from recovery mode would not work on 4.x. Now he's on 6.x firmware and he cannot launch ANY applications that are on the Home Menu. They just do "bling", and nothing happens. Some applications such as System Settings and the Browser cause the system to lock up and freeze when attempting to open them. Launching games does not work according to him either, they just do "bling".
He has Monster Hunter Generations cart which to my understanding holds 10.x firmware, which could be used as a cart update. However after updating to this 6.x with Omega Ruby, he cannot do cart updates either to my understanding. According to 3DS Guide you must visit recovery mode, then hit cancel and press Start to reboot? This is already where it fails, as canceling the update shuts the console off. Regardless, if he then powers the device on and inserts cart and attemps to launch it's just a "bling" and nothing more so there's no option for cart update?
Recovery Mode Update apparently gets update to 1/4th of the way, and then always fails.
With browser, system settings AND game cart exploits being out of the picture, is the consensus here that he is SOL?
Another fun fact: He had NAND backup, but lost it. Thought he's bricked for good, so wiped the SD card. Assuming nothing's written on the SD card, if you ran a recovery program on it would it be plausible to recover the file intact? Even if he had the file intact though, in a case like this would hardmod be the only possiblity?
By the way for the most part when testing things his SD card hasn't been inside the console but that shouldn't affect anything as far as attempting an update etc. goes .. right?
And lastly yes, I know that updating on 2.1 instead of proceeding on with the guide is dumb and all but I don't know all the details here either and what went through with their head so it's pointless to comment on that.
