You don't want it in ad-hoc mode, you want it in AP mode (access point) which lets you set what security you want, then use Internet Connection Sharing from your main internet to the "alt wifi".

Edit: If I remember, it's also known as infrastructure mode.

What are you using for your alternate wifi? How is your computer connected to the internet? Are you using any software for WiFi or the default Windows settings?

Answering these will give people a clearer idea of your current setup and how to configure ICS.

Edit: also, which version of Windows? Windows 10 made the process much easier.

I think we're missing some useful information that can fix the problem somewhat easily, but I suspect it'll be like pulling nails to get the needed details.

What do you mean by alt wifi? Why do you want to use it instead of non-alt wifi?
What make and model is your router? How is it set up?
Your computer, unless it is both wired physically to the router and has built in wifi, would lose internet if you tried to set it up as it's own wifi (unless you do some funky juju with your router)

He means AltWFC. Official WFC is dead now.

DS/DSi/3DS does not support ad-hoc wifi, and I don't think Connectify Hotspot supports WEP, otherwise I would suggest that. What you can do is use an open hotspot, and use mac address filtering to block other devices from connecting, but I would recommend not leaving it on when not in use as it's very easy for someone to spoof your (3)DS' mac address and leech your wifi. Personally I used to use a spare router that was only connected when I wanted to play a DS game online, but these days I don't really play DS games anymore so it's not needed.
If you can get ahold of one of the Nintendo Wifi USB Connectors then you could also use that, you plug it in your PC and it acts like a hotspot that can only be accessed by a DS game, eBay might have them for cheap. No clue whether it will work on a modern version of Windows though.
