Maplestory 3DS: The Girl of Destiny [100% ENG Patch][Release]

Please update to the latest version before reporting any bugs/crashes. Latest version says v1.03 during the game's boot.

Hey Everyone!

Today I'd like to introduce you to the English Translation of the game:
Maplestory: The Girl of Destiny (3DS):

ip3Qfyq.png

Current Progress: DONE (100% done)
We'd like to present you with the awesome release trailer made by SoyAlexPop for us:

It's out now!

We have worked hard to translate this game for the fans of the Maplestory series to enjoy. Maplestory 3DS is similar to it's PC MMO counterpart but is unique because it has a full story-line focused on an original main character named Mugi. The game features advanced mechanics like environment pieces you can use to help solve puzzles or even as weapons to defeat your foes (things like rolling boulders, lightning storm clouds, etc.).

It's a lot of fun and as fans of the game series we want to help you all to be able to enjoy it too.

The Team:
iser911 - New Lead Translator
(translated 50+% of the game).
WillTheLion - Project Coordinator, Translator & UI/GFX Text Editing
DavidKang- Translator (helped with Korean text)
Flyingsky - Text Translator and Tinkerer
Liomajor - UI/GFX Text Editing and Cut-scenes
Glitch - Text Translating + Cut-scenes
Vague Rant - Proof Reader and Script Editor

Honorable Mentions:
Sliter - Some Graphics
Truner - Logo Art
SoyAlexPop - Trailer Video
IcySon55 - Hosting the Translation Discord

Download Translation Patch v1.03 + NTR Plugin for Easy Use:

Features cleaner subtitles, Korean dubbed videos, a new banner with the actual English logo. A small bug that caused the Chief of Leafre to have blank text boxes has been fixed.

Release time! All crashes and bugs fixed. All proofread and corrected. Also we found a new way to create the .ctpk image files that greatly lowered the file size and maintained 100% quality so the patch is now has much faster load times. Here's the links to the update:

New version 1.03 NTR patch: http://www86.zippyshare.com/v/P0BGr8Ju/file.html

The crash was caused by our .ctpk taking up too much VRAM during the final boss because of how big and animated he is. He takes up lots of memory. This and all other bugs have been fixed. This in theory is the "definitive version".

Please update to the latest version before reporting any bugs/crashes.

Hello Player!

This is the v1.03 version of the game. The text has been proof-read and many bugs/crashes have been fixed
since our initial release. There shouldn't be any more crashes but please if there is a crash let us know!

IF THE GAME CRASHES: Please take note of the name of the map where you were before it crashed
as well as the portal you tried to take that caused the game to crash.
~IF you know how to use JKSM to export your save, if you'd like to export a copy of your
save file from right before where it crashed that could be helpful too.

All that having been said, we're hopeful that all bugs have been fixed, and hopefully you won't have any issues.

If you still find a crash let us know here please: https://discord.gg/xkyPhSX

If you find some broken color tags or text that goes of screen feel free to tell us what
the message said and we'll fix it quickly. Or post a screenshot that'd be even better!

Thanks again guys! We hope you have as much fun playing as we did translating this for you!

-WillTheLion

The easiest way to use the patch is to use the NTR plugin Flyingsky has made for use with the the patch and the game. Or you could always check that one iso site.

1. You need the NTR Firmware to use the layeredFS plugin
2. Install it.
(If you can't start NTR using those 2 files make sure you have tick "SysNAND is updated (A9LH-only)" in your A9LH options)
3. Then copy the plugin folder to the root of your SD card.
Copy all the changed files into a folder called "maple" on the root of your SD card.

4.Start NTR on your 3DS and start your game (cartridge or cia doesn't matter).

The maple folder uses the same folder structure as the normal romfs uses and as such can also be used inside your own romfs file if you would rather use HANS.

If you'd like to use these in your own game with HANS by dumping your own romsf folder, and then copy and pasting the files from the maple folder into your dumped/extracted romfs folder (replace the original files), and then rebuild your own romfs. Name it 00111600.romfs and put it in the 'hans' folder on the root of your sd card. Then run the game cart or cia through hans in the homebrew launcher.

Here's a good guide of how to extract and rebuild your own romfs: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-how-to-decrypt-extract-rebuild-3ds-roms.383055/

Even though we've now translated 100% of the game, we still intend to refine this to make it better. We'll also fix any bugs or crashes if any come up. Please let us know of any problems you have and we'll happily fix them.

The comma here is misplaced, it should really come between "you" and "right". "during your fight was helping you, right?"
And it's time to take a break.

I want to take a moment to correct an error I made previously: I claimed that Yulete in your translation was actually Juliet, but I was wrong. Upon reaching this part of the script, I see that you had it right before I came along: Yulete is in this game and Juliet is not. I've edited it out of the post where I suggested this change, and I apologize for any additional effort this caused.
Looks like the next revision will have lots of typo fixes.
You don't have to apologize for it. If anything, we should be the one grateful that someone's trying to point out any typo.

These look a bit mistranslated. I got some help from a native speaker on IRC (thanks Kobosuke!) and he confirmed that Frankenroid is saying "Are you intruders?" and "No intruders allowed." in these lines. He's also doing that thing robots do in Japanese where they talk in all-katakana (which is what makes translating stuff like this such a hassle). There's not really an equivalent way to write things "robotically" in English, but short, simple sentences should do the job just fine. Sometimes robot speech is translated into all-caps in English, but this can just end up looking like shouting.

I think Yulete is actually saying something like "Oh! This is it! You've saved me!"

I referenced this previously, most of the script uses "ok" (or "Ok" at the beginning of lines, like here), not "okay" spelled out.

I'm not sure if this double line break is intentional or not. There usually aren't gaps in speech like this, in the rest of the script.
"that makes him so special for me." --> "that's why he's so special to me."

I think "realized" might fit better than "noticed" for what Yurete is saying here.
"getting recognized" --> "to be recognized"

Hey would you like to join the team as the 'wise and powerful proof reader'?

https://discord.gg/xkyPhSX

If you prefer posting fixes on the thread that'd be okay too. But as dedicated as you are we invite you to join our team's chat.
Then we could communicate more easily /directly. We could also then give you access to the current files.
Then you could edit them yourself if you'd like. ;)

Anyway thanks for the help regardless.

EDIT: FIXED.

"Don't pause during the final boss battle. It makes the game crash and we don't know why yet."

If anyone has a save file from right before the final boss (or the almost final boss) then please export your save file and upload it for us so that we may test this issue easier by getting to the boss faster than beating all the bosses in the Dojo's Boss Run challenge.

Just saw that this game got fully translated today and I was pretty shocked. It is a rare occasion that I see a fantranslation get finished, as most translation projects seem to eventually die off. I was a fan of the MMO, but it taught me that soloing it won't get me anywhere fast, and introduced me to the concept of toxic players, so having a single-player version of the game to play sounds more up my alley.

I just wish I had known that the name you type in for your file is what they name the girl. Now I have a female character with the name Chris x_x

This is an amazing project! Thanks for all of your efforts and I'm happy to see this has come to completion.

I'm new to all this and am looking for some advice. Do I need anything more than al9h Luma 3DS to use the plugin provided? How do I go about setting up NTR with my current setup?

@kid sampson, if you're able to locate a pre-patched .cia of the MapleStory 3DS translation hack, you can just install that using FBI and not worry about using NTR. The downside of this approach is that if there are any further updates in the future, you'll have to redownload a new .cia, backup your save, install the new update, then restore your save. The upside is that you just install the CIA as you usually would and there's no additional work, besides save management.

If you'd like to use the NTR plugin, where you can download just the translation files and apply them to a clean MapleStory .cia at runtime (and apply updates in the same way), you'll need to install NTR on your 3DS. This means copying ntr.bin (should be included in the patch download) to your SD card and installing a fork of BootNTR such as astronautlevel2's via FBI to start it up. NTR needs to be booted on your 3DS each time you want to use it, it's not a "permanent" CFW like Luma3DS is. The downside to this approach is that a) you need to install NTR first, and b) you have to launch NTR each time you want to play MapleStory 3DS in English. The upside is very small update downloads and a simple drag-and-drop to SD card instead of installing a new CIA each time there's an update (although there shouldn't be terribly many updates).

Release time! All crashes and bugs fixed. All proofread and corrected. Also we found a new way to create the .ctpk image files that greatly lowered the file size and maintained 100% quality so the patch is now has much faster load times. Here's the links to the update:

NTR + Patch v1.02: https://mega.nz/#!aFIQkLyD!SD4zve47TYjt0nIpy7Gl7d0g56GNSx4V76q-mf_mWqs

The crash was caused by our .ctpk taking up too much VRAM during the final boss because of how big and animated he is. He takes up lots of memory. This and all other bugs have been fixed. This in theory is the "definitive version".

I appreciate the thorough response. Since the file is small, I do not think I'll bother with using BootNTR. I don't see myself using it much beyond this project. Many thanks for the explanation and the good work put into this. So glad to see both this response and an update today. One more day to go in the weekend — just in time!

Uhm.. does this work?
I converted the .3ds to .cia, installed it and opened BootNTR CFW Selector and selected 3.4 as always, but the game is still in Korean. (yes, I put all the files from the zip in the root of my SD)

Also, I don't know how to update it since my 3DS eShop is Italian and neither Freeshop and that title key site do have the key for this game..
This is harder then I expected, will there be some kind of video tutorial or something?

Hey, I'm sorry if this question was already asked.(even tho I used search before:P)I was wondering how much trouble would this be to merge this into the CIA.

ps. I didn't try it yet, was just wondering if the performance is affected like it is with Monster Hunter Stories.

Sorry, your problem is that the patch is for the Japanese version, not the Korean one. It should be possible for us to make a patch for the Korean version, too, but it hasn't gotten anywhere past idle talk so far. In the meantime, you should either find a clean Japanese version (thankfully, much easier to find than the Korean game), or use a pre-patched CIA if you can locate one.
Previously, they were all stored raw, which was causing some long load times and at least one crash, presumably due to memory filling up with uncompressed graphics. We compressed them with ETC1 SlowPerceptual, which took hours but resulted in images that look identical to the naked eye.

Not too difficult as long as you can unpack/repack a CIA (which is pretty much automated these days). Performance is indeed affected, you will get shorter load times running a repacked CIA compared to using NTR. If you're able to find or create your own it is quite nice from what I've heard, but I haven't tried it yet, personally (layeredFS for life!).
