Hacking Softbrick New 3DS updated from FW 2.1 (With NAND backup)

Hi all,
Trying to install CFW on 11.2U I forgot to turn on WiFi and when I was in 2.1 using CTRtransfer.
I updated using a game cartridge (Super Mario Maker 3DS) without realizing that this can cause a brick. Now my system won't let me access system settings or fails to update to the latest firmware, either by using recovery mode or updating regularly.
I have a NAND backup but can't access Hourglass9 or homebrew launcher.
My system is in firmware 11.1.0-4U as far as I know.

Any thoughts? Do I need to do a hardmod?

You will need a hardmod. How did you miss:

This, in the 2.1 CTR transfer (first message at top of page)

If you downgrade to 2.1.0 on a 2DS or New 3DS and left Wireless Communication off, you can re-enable the wireless by removing the battery and unplugging the charger for several seconds then booting back up.

And this, last message in red on same page:

Never update a New 3DS running 2.1.0 (an Old 3DS firmware) or you will BRICK! You MUST restore a NAND backup or ctrtransfer back to standard New 3DS firmware first!

And this, in the middle of the instructions for installing a9lh from the dukesrg website:

• If your wifi switch is off, unplug the 3DS and remove the battery for several seconds to enable wifi
