Hacking Lost my Pokemon Y version forever, but have the save.../Desperate/.

Okay, so as the title says...yeah.

but I still have the save file...

I tried PM'ing the person who created this topic

but I don't have permission to.

Save files apparently only work on the original cartridge, although I see someone in there stated they were able to extract Pokemon from the cartridge save...

while that may be possible, I'm not sure if I would forever only be limited to dumping them into an offline-only version of the game or not.

I'm not even sure if I'll ever find someone who has the knowledge to do this, but I figured as my literal last and final option to retrieve what was an entire decade of lost work, including shinies with perfect IVs that I hatched on my own and almost all of the rarest events ever released that I got myself, I should at least try...

Not necessarily. If you have the "raw" file from the save (called "main"), you can use PKHeX to view it directly on a computer. If you have it in PowerSaves or gateway format (*.sav) it gets a little more tricky.

How did you backup the save file? Can you upload it? Depending on how you backed up the save file, restoring it to a new cartridge or CIA-installed game could be very easy.

What are the steps I would need to take in order to successfully transfer my work back into a legit cart?

Have you tried using FBI to install a legit cia copy of y onto your console. Then using a save manager such as savedatafiler or jksm save manager from the homebrew launcher to copy the save to the digital version of the game. If you don't have a9lh then there is an FBI fork in this forum that has safehax built into it so you can install legit cia's. Get the CIA from that ISO site and make sure it's legit and not a cartridge dump.

It is impossible to recover data from a Powersaves backup without the cartridge.

It might be possible to recover it if you have a full copy of the original ROM from that particular cartridge (as in a Gateway dump and not a Decrypt9 dump - Decrypt9 doesn't keep the private header), but doing so is outside of my skill set.

but nah, and to make matters worse, it's located on a hard drive that I will have to pay Geek Squad $100 that I don't have at the moment to transfer to my current laptop.

I used to, but my dog slapped my second one to the floor and broke that one too. Even though it literally only fell about 2-3 ft.

Whats the point of a powersaves backup then? That's dumb. that's like backing up a laptop to a disk you leave in the laptop.

3DS cartridge saves are encrypted on a per-cartridge basis. Powersaves backups are a raw backup.

It's a lot cheaper to just buy an external enclosure for that drive than to pay GeekSquad to transfer it for you.

Or you could .. I don't know, take out the hard drive in your current laptop and plug in the old hard drive into it? Most if not all newer laptops have the HDD's on the side and they are very easy to remove .. One screw, if even that and you just pull it out. Then push the old one in. You'd pay $100 for Geek Squad to do that for you? What a rip off.

Incidentally laptop hard drives are just a tiny versions of HDD's inside desktops so you could do this with a desktop computer too.

Also I believe that you can't PM users if you don't have enough posts in the forum. By posting in this thread (or any other) and tagging his name @PerdxxBlade like this will get his attention.

Yeah, I thought of that, but the thing is, it's actually my father's laptop and he won't allow me to do that since he has important documents and we have had bad luck with laptops/hard drives dying on us for no reason lately. I'll probably be able to talk him into it though

But it literally does no harm to a computer. That's like saying that removing an USB drive from a computer can randomly break the USB. Which it could, if you didn't remove it "safely". Of course if you removed your laptop drive it would be when it's turned off. Honestly if I were you I'd just do it without telling my father because he wouldn't notice it either way. Takes you a minute to swap the drive .. Few minutes to retrieve files, and another minute to swap drive again.

If all else fails then you can buy the extrernal cover for the HDD and use that through USB to retrieve the files but tbh it's waste of money if you don't need to do it.
