Hacking About to buy a New 3DS XL, is the Guide still ok to use?

I've only had time to briefly read about hacks of Luma and github being down, etc.

Quick question: if I buy a New 3DS XL and microSD card today, will I still be able to follow 3ds.guide and get it sorted with Luma, etc?

Also, do I need to buy at least 1 cartridge game? i.e. does the guide require one in the slot at any time?

Only the github for Luna was hacked, the guide is still valid. Just download Luma from the guide, its a safe mirror.
Whether or not you can actually do this is dependant on the new 3ds FW.
You don't need a cartridge game exactly. If your on 11.2, you need to get a dsiware game.
And the guide doesn't need anything in the slot unless your using a cart-based hax, such as oothax, basehaxx, or cubic ninja

Where were you for the past week? The guide was updated to allow installing CFW even on the lastest Firmware.
Help is always appreciated, but at least do some research yourself to avoid giving false information.

It is legit. Not sure if you're trolling or not. 11.2 is fully exploitable, and it is the latest FW. There is literally 0% chance to buy a 3DS in the store that is not hackable right now. All cart-based exploits are obsolete as of now .. for now. You don't need anything but a 3DS, an SD card and a brain to do the new hack. Sadly most of the newbie users are lacking in the brain deparment given the ridiculous amount of new threads about A9LH every day.

Ofc they are lacking in brains dept., because people somehow think its OK to continue without a backup.
Makes me wonder the train of thought that would make them think its OK
