sysNAND.
If you have A9LH, you don't need either emuNAND nor redNAND. Not to mention with new3DS, those will be like 2GB of your SD card taking up just by the NANDs alone, leaving you with like maybe 5GB of space.

some ppl might want emu/red nand tho
I use it more because i use gateway for mario kart online and would rather not risk me forgetting to go into luma mode and updating

If you have A9LH with Luma3DS, you can run an updated sysNAND and emuNAND. If the OP wants to use redNAND, chances are they aren't using a Gateway because Gateway doesn't support redNAND. Which means they have no reason to keep using an emuNAND because it will just take up too much space.

The old guide states that rednand is like a trimmed emunand. Though there's no con with rednand, rednand will run faster than emunand.

pro's and cons for each is what im looking for.
There's no reason to use rednand. If you are using Gateway you have to use emuNAND and if you're not then there's no reason to use either.

It's like asking if you should use stilts or shark repellent to get around. If you're travelling through the ocean (Gateway) best to use shark repellent for extra safety. If you're travelling over land you don't need either (a lot of bother and awkwardness for no gain), except some particular uncommon uses might need stilts - maybe if you need to pick some apples on the way.

First off, redNAND and emuNAND are different. redNAND redirects sys calls to SD card, whereas emuNAND runs an emulated NAND off SD card. Not the same thing. Kthx.

Now that A9LH is around, there are very little benefits to red/emuNAND. If you are using Gateway, you'll be using emuNAND (not redNAND), as Quantumkitty said. The other reasons to use emunand/rednand: If you want a clean sysnand for tournaments and an emunand for all your pirated stuff, if you use a tool that still only works on 9.2 (although I don't know of any) you'll want an emunand of 9.2.

Those are the only pros I can think of. Cons: it's slower (SD redirects or from SD card is technically slower than from NAND) and uses half the space on your SD card.

A9LH has firm protection, so you can never update your 3DS and have A9LH go bye bye.

Thanks for providing 0 constructive feedback to the conversation. And no, this is not a flame ware. It's a simple question regarding emu/rednand. No need to make everything a flame war.

Oh and BTW pros and cons:

Arm9loaderhax:
+everything from sysnand
+custom recovery
+who needs hardmods?
+anti-update protection for fools who update junk
+eaiser on the SD card
+free stuffs
+custom themes
+save dumps/editors
+no button combos on startup unless you need something specific
+can be used without SD
+100℅ cfw bootrate

-can be a bit of a pain for a noob to set up
-otp less causes random bricks (but it was removed from the guide, so to be fair this one shouldn't count)
-sometimes you need to wait for FW support

Emunand:
+free stuffs
+custom themes
+emulated nand, so its great for development purposes
+can fk this up all you like, and nothing will happen
+eaiser to use with GW
+bit simpler to set up
+will always support latest FW, so long as your cfw does

-harder on the SD, shortening its total life
-can't really be used if your SD is lower then 16gb
-can brick or update sysnand if you don't update properly
-only 100% boot rate if its booted one way, any other is like 80%
-have to boot homebrew in order to access it
-because of kernel permissions needed, must be on 10.7 or less to boot it
-not really recommended anymore due to the fact that everything that almost any feature available on this, is also on a9lh

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

EmuNAND and a9lh are not mutually exclusive. You are thinking of menuhax. Also, the OP's question title says he is using a9lh already.

Well either way, the og emunand was a tad slower, but its not really noticeable anyway

Considering he's using n3ds I'd have to say rednand, but ONLY if I had to choose one. If it were me, I'd choose neither :rofl2:

There are really no pros to them anymore. They were make to protect your sysNAND/CFW from being updated and removed by Nintendo. Since the release of A9LH, there's no longer a need for them

i figured it out. renand is, reason is I may go to tournaments someday. And I know some judges can be anal about cfw. so using kecleon's patch for sutff.

You don't need a redNAND for that.

I think I'm right in saying that a9lh doesn't have firm protections [a9lh being installed in nfirm can't protect itself]. The firm protection comes from Luma3DS

EmuNAND and RedNAND are basically the same thing. RedNAND is better if not using Gateway just because RedNAND only duplicates the part of NAND that is actually being used whereas Gateway EmuNAND duplicates the entire NAND, which may be 0.6GB larger on some N3DS consoles.
