I had/have little knowledge of 3DS hacking and 6 months ago when i wanted to play a fan translation of a Japanese game, i basically handed my 3DS to others to set up to play that.

One of the things either missed or skipped was the ability to play online and access the eshop. This basically means i am unable to purchase games or DLC from the eshop. I know many people like to play games simply downloaded from the internet, but i take pride in owning physical cartridges of all my games. So, i would like to ''start again'' from scratch to allow for access to the eshop and to play games online.

What steps do i need to go through to discover what my 3DS has and how it has been hacked so i can then remove it and do it all over again but this time, with online and eshop functionality?

Since even you don't know what is the current setting of your console, this is going to be hard.
First, please show us the content of your root of SD/MicroSD.

Hold select button on start up and tell us what happens, or post a picture of the SD as stated above. 6 months ago A9LH and Luma3DS combo was the most optimal set-up. If it boots up very quickly and directly to the home menu like a unhacked 3DS, but you can play fan translations, then you've almost definitely got A9LH.

If the 3DS takes a while to boot, sometimes freezes on start up, the screen flickers different colours or text scrolls down like a POST screen, you've got menuhax which is obsolete in more recent days.

head over to 3ds.guide if you wish to use the top of the line cfw. Can you tell us this, are you using what is called menuhax? screen crashes and flashes colors and boots your "cfw"/emunand? if on emunand/menuhax, follow the guide and it will set up a better option for you.

OK guys, thanks for the help. I will record a video of my 3DS with my phone during start up and by doing everything you guys suggest.

Give me a few minutes.

But before i do that, i know it has a few things. Menuhax, Homebrew Channel, BootNTR (the program that lets me play out of region games) and EmuNAND9. Oh and it shows the anime girl with the word 'Reinand' during boot.

I have a very vague idea of what EmuNAND and SysNAND are and that there are ''two'' operating systems on the 3DS.

Then, you have 2 choice
  1. Read, try to understanding, then follow this guide: http://3ds.guide/ Beware, missing something in this guide can cause a brick. Also this method risking in editting a SysNAND. Please following the guide correctly or you can't recover if you accidently got bricked. If you really following that guide correctly, chance of bricking is under 0.00001%
  2. But, if you don't want to risk on 0.00001% chance of brick, just change your ReiNAND to Luma3DS. But, this setting is not as good as the first choice.

OK sure. I will do the second option as long as i am still able to do what i can do right now, AND play online with my legally purchased games and access the eshop. If i can do all that, then that is what i shall do.
afterwards i would HIGHLY reccomend removing menuhax and reinand and switch to Luma (a fork of reinand)

Keep in mind that you are speaking to a moron in regards to 3DS hacking. Just saying ''remove x'' means little to me as i dont know what menuhax is or what it's purpose is and i dont want you or anyone else to waste their time trying to explain something to me that will just fly right over my head and likely be pointless trying to explain it to me anyway.

If you want to mainly play legally purchased games, I suggest you to risk and go to a first choice.
Since emuNAND (current setting) is drain SD card space.

But, this is up to you since I can't guarantee that you won't get brick.
Atleast when the guide tell you to create back up, do it. That back up can help if you're unlucky case.

Then going a first choice may be a bad choice for you. Good Luck then.

yknow Luma lets you run japanese games without changing the region? i dont understand why youre upset. and i was mentioning it because i know theres a way to do it and im sure someone here would know what im talking about and give you a guide, also, if you dont want an explanation, why ask?

I will be using a 32gb card and since i am not a heavy 3DS gamer, i dont mind if i can only have a few games on the card at once.

What makes you say i am upset? I have no idea how you got that notion from anything i have said. I am actually happy to receive some help on this as it is far beyond my level of understanding.

perhaps the wording, but essentially Luma3DS is an updated version of ReiNand. theres a full documented guide on how to setup your system at http://3ds.guide/. it supports all the features of reinand as far as i know, and you can update and be fine.
