Hi guys,

I got a new 3DS XL a few days ago (11.1 firmware) and I want to play roms on it because games is just too expensive. I'm SUPER new and SUPER noob to this. Can someone please direct (or tell me) a proper step by step guide on how to be able to play roms on my new 3ds? I've been looking around but getting absolutely nowhere.

If theres no way to hack it, is there a flashcard compatible with 11.1? (My friend used gateway before for 9.2)

*Also open to hardmodding if that works?

Thank you so much!

You will need someone to help you who has a cfw 3ds already. Does your friend still have cfw?

Otherwise you will have to hardmod.

nope she lost her DS :( So the steps are hardmod to downgrade the firmware and I would be able to put roms on it? (sorry I must sound like such an idiot)

Pretty much. You have to install them, so it's not drag and drop, but essentially that's it.

Depending on the price for the hardmod you might be better off just buying an old 3ds/2ds on the right fw for $50-$60 and hacking the system that way.

I don't recommend getting a hardmod for any more than that. Because if you buy a system you get to keep it and have 2 hacked systems. Also a lot of new stuff is happening lately on the scene, so I'd wait a few days to see if your fw becomes hackable with just 1 3ds.

Can someone please tell me what actually happens after hardmodding?

So step 1: hardmod
step 2: downgrade
step 3: install custom firmware?

Can I just confirm if this is the process I have to go through? (at the moment I can get my friend to help me hardmod it but we have no idea how to do everything else after that?)

Is this still the up to date and accurate guide on how to hardmod? (https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutoria...ing-2ds-3ds-3ds-xl-n3ds-n3ds-xl.414498/#newxl)

Yes those are the steps. Follow this guide https://3ds.guide/hardmod-downgrade

If you had looked at the link 3ds.guide earlier it would have made this all very clear. The guide you linked is even linked there. (and yes that guide you linked is up to date)

I had a look at that guide, I dont have a browser. Is there any way to do it without the games or without the powersaves?

is it worth it to get sky 3ds+ or gateway?

It is not worth it. Gateway only works if you have a 3ds on the right fw anyway, and sky3ds necessitates dumping legit headers from actual games to go online (and is super pricey).

I have a gateway, but I bought it years ago before cfw was a thing. Today there is no reason to buy these things.

Either hardmod, softmod with the help of someone with a cfw 3ds (or wait a few days and see if the scene evolves after the recent hacker conference).

Right now with fasthax you can install some games to your 3ds even without cfw, but you need legit games and there are only ~30 that are compatible.

If you don't know what you're doing I'd recommend sending the 3DS to a trusted GBATemp user located in the UK .. they would mod your console and send it back to you - ready to use. You'd be able to download games from freeShop (though freeShop got DMCA'd recently, you can still use it if you find the cia file) and would be basically set. Alternatively, as stated, get an used 2DS/3DS at £50-ish on a FW of 10.7 or less. You would be able to hack that console for free, without requiring anything. That console in turn, could be used to hack your current console for just a fiver I believe (DSiWare system transfer exploit). I would recommend this method over others because it's super easy to do, and costs the same amount as any other alternative but you're left with two systems - One could be resold, or might have an use in the future.

Gateway you would not be able to use, because as far as I know you'd still need to be on 9.2? FW to use Gateway and to get there you need to downgrade. Sky3DS works as is - out of the box, but is very limited, Pokemon Sun/Moon don't work on it still ("Soon" they say). CFW would give you so much more, and Sky3DS is expensive too - at it's price you could get your console hacked anyway. So don't even bother.

The hacking scene is constantly evolving so there might be some new hacks coming out soon too so you could just sit and wait. Right now wait/fasthax require one of the specific four DSiWare titles to downgrade on 11.0-11.2, but perhaps with enough time a hack can be developed which works with other titles too. But it could take days or weeks - or even longer.

Right now we are doing system transfer from O3DS (CFW) to N3DS and the guide says do not delete the source's system SD card but the transfer says all data on the system will be deleted, does this mean the SD card source will be deleted as well?

Also, what does NNID mean in the guide?

thank you!

As far as I remember it won't delete the SD card if you tell it that you will swap SD-cards but let someone else confirm this, I only ever did one system-transfer myself. And NNID stands for Nintendo Network ID.

When it says data on the system, it means on the nand itself. The sd will be fine. It always says that at the beginning of the system transfer.

Getting confused on Section VI - Restoring the source 3DS, in https://3ds.guide/dsiware-downgrade-(app-injection-and-second-3ds). Currently doing system transfer but I do not understand how to restore my old system and what the significance is of the NNID? Where do I need it to be and what is the NNID for?

Thanks so much for all your help guys! really appreciate it!

  1. On the source 3DS, complete initial setup
  2. Do one of the following
    • Do the rest of the sections and then the full guide on the target 3DS, then wait one week, then System Transfer from the target 3DS back to the source 3DS (remember you cannot transfer back from a New 3DS to an Old 3DS)
    • Call Nintendo and tell them you no longer have access to the device that your NNID is linked to (which is the target 3DS in this case), and would like it linked to a different device (which is the source 3DS in this case)
    • You can also just remove the NNID from the source 3DS if you’d prefer it remain on the target 3DS
  3. Reboot the source 3DS while holding Start to launch Hourglass9
  4. Go to SysNAND Backup/Restore and restore SysNAND from NANDmin.bin
The nnid is what you use to access online services such as the eshop and miiverse. If you don't follow one of the steps listed you will have issues with these services in the future.

When you transferred, your nnid was linked to the target 3ds. If you restore the nand to your source 3ds it will have the same nnid. But Nintendo's system will only have the target listed with the nnid. That's why you need to follow one of the steps listed.

Thanks for clearing that up, I understand that I can only have the original NNID on one of the consoles. How can i get a new NNID for the other one?

Thanks for your patience!!!

If you system transfer back in a week, your target console will be formatted - and you can just setup a new nnid.
