The HDD in question is an IBM DeskStar 61.5GB hard drive. The tutorial I used is here:

I tried booting both with and without anything plugged in (memory cards, flash drives, etc) but nothing helped. I also had the adapter screwed on as tightly as I could without breaking it. Any ideas?

I'll list a few things you may want to give a try...
I. Do you have the jumpers on the HDD set to cable select or master? Try both...
II. What version of fcmb are you using? If its the newest v0.973 try an older version.

I wouldn't recommend screwing it too tight, because it could strip the screws, and really offers no benefit since only the molex power and pata connections are what interfaces with the console between the HDD and adapter. The screws just keep the network adapter locked in place with its connection. It could just be that bugs still exist, or its compatibility issues with this specific drive.

None of these two... what you did install is the SONY broswer update (2.0) aka HDDOSD (with some homebrew installed on it).
Ah. Didn't realize that, lol. Forgot to mention, I did stray away from the tutorial a bit. I used it up until the HDD Raw Copy part for the disk image, and used a copy of FHDB instead. That might have messed it up.

I guess the jokes on me. The video was the spoiler... :toot:

Edit: I would just install FHDB using FMCB 0.973 (R1 main menu), and load Open PS2 Loader.

I see. I guess you can hear your PS2 HDD booting over and over ?

1. Perform a "scan and repair" with WinHiip over your HDD. Should be done everytime you install an image not made using your HDD.
2. You now need to enable HDD support on your HDD. The only way to do this is to run FMCBInstaller. Download it from here : http://ichiba.geocities.jp/ysai187/PS2/FMCB/ This will upgrade your FHDB install to 1.953.
3. However, you will still see "Free HD Boot 1.93" in hacked OSD. You need to refresh it using FMCB configurator (search for "top delimitor", then hit select to set defaut). Save and enjoy.

I'm a bit confused. How do I run the installer? Do I just put it on a flash drive, plug it into the PS2, and boot it up?

Yes. But don't delete any files from the (uncompressed) archive.
I extracted all the files onto the root of my flash drive (formatted in FAT32), turned on my PS2, and plugged in my flash drive during the boot sequence, and the HDD still loops. If I have my flash drive plugged in when I turn the system on, it flashes once or twice, then the activity light just shuts off instead of slowly fading in and out like my flash drive is supposed to do in idle mode, and the HDD starts looping on and off again.

Misunderstanding. You need to RUN the FMCBInstaller.ELF (with uLE), hit R1 (if I remember correctly), then choose "Install FHDB". Then FHDB will be updated. During the install, you will get a message "FHDB conf file found. Keep it ?" (not exact message), choose Yes.

I can't get into uLE or any other program since the PS2 won't boot into FMCB or FHDB, it just goes straight into a black screen and the HDD starts turning off and on again. I don't have FMCB installed on a memory card, either.

EDIT: Doing a full erase/format on the drive instead of a quick one, gonna redo the install process afterward.

You cant use the FHDB 1.93 image if you cant already run uLE.

So you need to make a clean FHDB install. Here you are for the instructions :

1. Use HDD low level format tool to low-format your HDD (http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/).
2. Use HDD Raw copy tool (http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/), write this image on your PS2 (http://aybabtu.chez.com/PS2/ule_wip7.zip). This is uLE (WIP7).
3. Plug your USB device with FMCBInstaller archive on it.
4. Start your PS2 (with your HDD). uLE WIP7 will boot.
5. Go to MISC/HddManager > R1 > Format HDD (yes, again). DO NOT POWER OFF YOUR PS2.
6. Using uLE, go to mass:/, then run FMCBInstaller.ELF, R1 > Install FHDB.

If you want to have some apps already installed, use the newbie pack instead of FMCB archive : http://www.mediafire.com/file/0acpyhxe6p2gq6r/FMCB1.953_NP.7z

Awesome. I'll get on it right away. I just write the zip file to the drive, right? There's no image file.
