Hardware What are Wii U discs made of? :)

Yep, had it happen with my copy of Sm4sh (stopped working for no reason at all 4 days after I got it), with Darksiders 2 after not playing for a long time, MH3U (i played the shit out of that game though, 1000+ hours) and the list goes on.

Sounds like they're made with an expiry date then. All of my games work thankfully.

Skylanders SuperChargers WiiU disc is an odd one though, the loading times tend to take a while to load up properly and freeze also.

I'd say this is something that WiiU collectors aren't aware of because, it matters that the games actually work otherwise it's a waste of plastic and valueless (well, not entirely but loses a lot of its value).

The real reason Wii U doesn't support normal blu-rays is that it would have enabled piracy instantly.

Nintendo is just stingy about paying for licences. They did the same on Wii which could have read DVDs but they decided it should only play Wii games.

They're single layer Blu-ray, to be accurate, rather than the commonly used double layered one. Each disk holds around 25GB of data. Even though there's no game even reached 20GB till now.

And Bayonetta 2 doesnt exist. And of course, itdoesnt fit 37GB.

I found this post wirtten on wikipedia, but it a bit confusing.

Perhaps is implying blu-ray movie compatibility was once part of the idea but rejected. Is not important cause we know that already and the wii disc are all DVD format, but wii u disc is made by panasonic, and never admits to being labeled "BLU-RAY DISC" Neither does the list of blu-ray disc users on the blu-ray wiki article. So if is not enough evidence to say Is a blu-ray disc, then maybe is not one.

But the smoothe edges though.

The Wii discs were DVD's that were read and written backwards if I recall correctly, so they were a little bit different in that regard. I was under the impression that the Wii U discs are Blu-ray discs modified in the same way, read and written backwards. I might be very wrong though, and only dreamed it all up

The older models of the Wii can play DVDs through homebrew, but it also enabled piracy.
Nintendo fixed this on the Wii U and the newer models of the Wii.

I personally never used my Wii to watch DVDs but I assume a good chunk did. Wii had a mediocre library of games while a great gaming console for those specific great Wii titles, BC GameCube and homebrew/emulators.

Yes. Nintendo has never been particularly interested in paying more for 'converged' media centre type of capabilities, so they avoid heaps of those Blu-Ray specific royalties. I think their incredible tightness hurts their brand to this day (it certainly makes me think of them as ruthless cheapskates) but that might be a discussion (disc-ussion...ho ho ho) for another day.

The discussion about games not working has been fascinating (I have yet to buy a Wii U & that would piss me right off, especially for a well-cared-for system).

Simple, buy the discs, dump them and repack and install.

Talking about discs... if you ever get a scratch in the middle transparent section of the disc... DO NOT USE IT cuz this part serves as a "holdpoint" for the disc reader. So if its danages, it might cause lil shakes on the disc and maybe damage it.
