NOTICE:

It has come to my attention that my old download links and instructions were within the gbatemp rules. I am not linking any actual roms, or full romfs files. I am only linking the individual edited files required to play Rising Sun & Waning Moon. If this is threatened to be taken down once more, I ask that mods first look and tell me why the Nova Sun/Umbra Moon mods do the same and have remained up.

Please ask if you want to upload this elsewhere, or at least give credit back to this post or my twitter.
Lets start off with some context. Currently, pk3DS allows us to edit the trainers and move sets of pokemon within Pokemon Sun and Moon. I decided to go ahead and create a challenge mode of sorts, similar to that of Pokemon Blaze Black/Volt White. Currently editing wild encounters!

Changes:
  • Trial Captains and Kahunas now all have teams of 6 Pokemon.
  • Level curve greatly changed. Team should be in high 70s/low 80s by the end of the elite 4.
  • Trainers have Pokemon not usually seen in Alola.
  • Movesets of weaker Pokemon is finished.
  • Youngster Joey has a top percent Rattata.
  • Wild encounters up until the post game are finished! Have fun everyone!
  • Custom music for post game returning trainers.
  • Almost every Pokemon has access to their hidden ability.

A NOTE ABOUT INSTRUCTIONS:
THE EASIEST METHOD IS GETTING A CFW, DO IT WHILE YOU CAN.
Instructions: (CFW Required for this method. See other method below if you don't have a CFW) I also still need to make the method easier for Pokemon Sun users, sorry!

THINGS YOU NEED:
- Latest nightly build of luma. (Get this through the .cia updater)
- The hack's GARC files (the stuff that actually overwrites the original assets) Get it from the Google Drive link

New and Updated Instructions! About time!

Luma Game Patcher Method:
    • Create a folder named titles inside luma.
    • Create a folder with the game's title id as the name (0004000000164800 for Sun, 0004000000175E00 for Moon) inside titles.
  • Create a folder titled romfs within luma/titles/(titleID)
  • Place the "a" and "data" folders within the "romfs" folder.
  • Make sure "Enable Game Patcher" is checked in luma3ds setup.
  • Start Sun/Moon
Thats it! Easiest way to tell if its working is by starting a new game or checking your Trainer Passport.

FOR POKEMON SUN USERS: RENAME THE "3" FILE IN a\0\8\ TO "2"

Layeredfs: (These instructions only apply if you use the Layeredfs files)

The LayeredFS feature allows you to replace RomFS files with files on the SD card for most games. To use it:
  • Create a folder named titles inside luma.
  • Create a folder with the game's title id as the name (0004000000164800 for Sun, 0004000000175E00 for Moon) inside titles.
  • Create a folder called romfs in the game's folder.
  • Place the "a" and "data" folders within the "romfs" folder.
  • For example, to use LayeredFS with Pokémon™ Sun, make a folder named romfs , put your replacement files in it, then put romfs in 0004000000164800.
FOR POKEMON SUN USERS: RENAME THE "3" FILE IN a\0\8\ TO "2"

Todo:
  • Re balance according to feedback.
  • Re balance Pokemon move sets and stats once tools are available.
  • Add in last few Pokemon. (Some starters, legendaries, etc.)
  • Finish documentation on the various changes.

Credits:
  • Creators of the tools pk3DS, extract repack, etc.
  • Drayano, for being a cool guy that's better at hacking than I am
Sellout:
I'm a filthy sellout. Follow me on twitter to know when major updates for the romhack come out. https://twitter.com/KobeRobsahm

Could you be a bit more specific? I don't particularly see the reasoning? How would this become the final product that is launched with Luma3DS/HANS?
The IPS patch I attached is applied to the code.bin loaded in memory by Luma3DS and contains the same changes made by the SaltySD patch. The difference is that instead of using armIPS to apply the patch, this is a stand-alone IPS patch that contains no copyrighted code. Using it would cut the instructions down to simply:

- Latest nightly build of luma https://astronautlevel2.github.io/Luma3DS/
- The hack's GARC files (the stuff that actually overwrites the original assets) Get it from the Google Drive link
- The code.ips file which is in the exefs.zip in the Google Drive.

Running extended code with luma
- Download the luma nightly release and update ur luma (just overwrite ur old armloaderhax.bin with the new one in the download)
- Create folders called SD:\\luma\titles\0004000000175E00\
- paste code.ips
- create folder called SD:\\SaltySD\sunmoon\ and place the "a" folder from the GARCS.zip in there.

And that should be it! You will know the hack is working once you encounter the first trainer, who is a Youngster with a level 5 Alolan Rattata.

This only works for Luma3DS of course, not HANS. Plus, you can combine this with other IPS patches such as Instant Text Speed, No Outlines, SciresM's QR code patch, etc.

Thanks for this! Although could you make the instructions more clear for me on how to make the IPS patch? Since I need an original unmodded file and a modded file. Just want to be able to easily provide a new .ips each time I update.

The IPS patch only applies SaltySD, so it's not something that needs to be updated unless SaltySD itself updates.

On the flipside, this means that you can now use this IPS patch to patch your code.bin to obtain SaltySD, which means that this makes things way better for HANS users, as instead of having to build a 3GB romfs, HANS users just need to dump their code.bin, obtain LIPS, apply the IPS patch to their code.bin and just use the saltySD, which ALSO means that instead of going through all the trouble of building SaltySD, you just use this ips patch to obtain it.

Oh I get now. The code.ips is for to skip all of the trouble for Salty SD. It gives you what you need for Luma 3DS I assume? I'll also go ahead and try using Salty SD with Hans now but I still have trouble with that.

You likely can use code.bin with hans but not code.ips

Yeah I was about to say, I'm unsure how this makes things easier for HANS users. Since the GARC files are still required. I'll go ahead and update the master post's information about the Luma3DS method though.

Yes, this method does not affect HANS users. They still need the code.bin file that's been patched by saltySD. The IPS patch would not need to be updated at all, unless code.bin is updated in an update put out by GameFreak that makes it incompatible.

Ok, thanks for all of your help. I've updated the instructions in the Master Post with the ones you gave me.

I can't seem to get this to work for Pokemon Sun on my old 3ds with luma and SaltySD. I have the files setup the same way it says to in the OP (/luma/titles/0004000000164800/code.bin and /SaltySD/sunmoon/a) but it won't work no matter what I do, what could I be doing wrong? Is there something else that I could be missing that needs to be on my SD Card?

I have the same problem..im using moon on a a9lh O3ds console with the lastest nightly build, and have everything set up corretly file-wise, but when i tried to start it up it just gave me a black screen... i first assumed it was because i had a save file on moon already, so i went into savedatafiler to back up the save to my sd card and then revert the save to factory default to start over...but its still giving me a black screen..sooo...i dunno..

Did you try it with the new ips method? Perhaps that would work. Also that guy said he got it working:

Well, I got it working now with Pokemon Sun. I used a clean Sun code.bin and turned that into the saltysd_code.bin, and it worked.

Uploading v0.5 right now!

Changelog:
  • Upon starting a new game, Professor Kukui will welcome you to Rising Sun or Waning Moon depending on which version of the game you have.
  • Went back and increased the level of a bunch of the trainers on the 2nd island.
  • Increased levels of trainers on the 3rd island. I felt as if mid game got a bit too easy when I played it.
  • Move set updates for some more Pokemon (Eeveelutions are notables)
  • Rebalanced the Aether Paradise.
  • Rebalanced the entire 4th Island.
  • Finished every post game trainer except for the Eeevee trainers.
  • Fixed a double battle that had 12 Pokemon (oops)
The game likely WILL get harder in the mid game, but that was much needed. You ended up pretty overleveled and nothing was a challenge until Po Town/Aether paradise.

Oh wait, when i tried to import my save from my original Moon game, something didn't look right...the v.04 wasn't showing in the trainers passport screen...does that mean i have to start over if i want to use this hack?

Either way, I would suggest starting over. The game's level curve will likely destroy your current team.

i put all my files for Luma but its still the same do i have to start a new file
Yes it seems like you might have to start a new file from what I've heard and seen. Make sure you back yours up. Sadly, I can't really help test out with Luma 3DS, so you guys are going to have to give me a lot of feedback on how that works out!
