So, I've been using al9h pre 7 october..everything works fine and perfect on my n3ds xl. Do you think it's worth it trying to update al9h to v4 and take the risk again?is it like installing al9h all over again with brick risk? thank you.

It's theoretically possible to brick but I don't think there has been a single reported case of bricking by updating A9LH with SafeA9LHInstaller. It's safe, just follow the guide.

This is what scared me :( I mean, I have everything working perfectly now...I wonder if it's worth the risk..Can anyone tell me what's the upside of v4 al9h?

I'm fairly sure I don't even have v2 installed. I'm also using a custom one with 2 or 3 stage 2s... what's new with all the versions? I didn't know there even was a v3, let alone a v4...

v4 is the first official build to support sdless booting and can read arm9loaderhax.bin from ctrnand (So you can boot without an sd card). Nearly no brick risk unless unless your 3ds dies in the half second it takes to update https://3ds.guide/updating-a9lh

and if you don't need SD-less booting? Any benefits to the original? So many things use an SD card, I don't understand why this is even a thing. The system even comes with a card (albeit a small one). Sure they can die, but it's not hard to put the required files on a new card. Not to mention you're (anybody) an idiot if you don't make backups of both your SD and your NAND(s) once in a while...

Mainly for people who use carts and use .cia for portableness and are not pirates. You can use larger payloads that will be needed in the future. Also what if you fuck up your sd card slot? (Like I did a week ago)

It's honestly not as bad as the 2.1.0 ctr transfer. All your doing is replacing a few files with updated ones then reconfiguring your 3ds through luma. Also if you have a backup of your sd card and you mess up you can just put the old files back on before the process. You really can't go wrong, just read the guide before proceeding.

If you mess up your SD slot, you need to repair or replace anyway. A .cia kind of REQUIRES an SD, unless you're only installing system/TWL/AGB files AND doing a wireless install. Many carts still use SD for saves. Still don't see the point.

I think SD-less A9LH eliminates the small risk of something possibly going wrong if your SD reader decides to die at precisely the wrong moment. I'm not sure if this has ever happened but I'm pretty sure I read Plailect mention the slight but nevertheless possibility of a worst case scenario occuring over on 3DShacks after v4 came out and there was a palpable sense of unease about even writing to CTRNand amongst some of the community. Happy to be corrected if if I've misunderstood something about this.

On fence about updating too. Would hate to *f up SD slot. How much NAND space is there?

What happens if you lose a9lh though? Will luma still boot through the ctr NAND?

If your SD card itself can't be read then the a9lh.bin just gets read off CTRNand and your 3DS boots. The one on the SD card gets priority. It's certainly safer to update to the latest official build than to install it fresh on an N3DS using OTP-less install (which is why some will recommend sticking with the CTR-transfer method).

A few games don't use sd cards. Its just a failsafe so your system isn't a brick while you wait to repair your device.
How does something like that even happen? You just get careless and cram it in there at an angle or something?
Taking the sd card in and out a ton of times over a year and a half. The spring that locks it broke but I got around that.

Not enough for a game to install unless you have dsiware game.

It's extremely unlikely for someone to brick when updating A9LH. In one night I switched between ShawdowNAND and A9LH several times and never bricked.
The upside is being able to copy Luma3DS to your CTRNAND and being able to launch Luma3DS with all of the patches without having the Arm9loaderhax.bin on your SDcard.

It's possible to brick, I have, yes.

But no, the chance is very very very low and I only bricked while installing an alternative version of a9lh, not official. The other week I changed by builds of a9lh over 4 times in one hour with no side effects.
