I moved all the data from the supplied 4gb microSD to a 16gb one and since then the 3ds won't switch on. It's unhacked so I don't think the SD card switch had anything to do with causing the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.

Symptoms:
  • 3DS doesn't switch on under any circumstance
  • Plugging in the charger with no battery inserted results in the red power light (charge light?) coming on for around 3 seconds then going out again
  • Plugging in the charger with the battery inserted results in the red light coming on for about 6 seconds with a small flicker after the first couple of seconds
I have tried with both a USB charging cable and an AC adapter. The battery was fully charged when I swapped the SD cards.

Incidentally the unit has always been a bit odd in the battery department. Occasionally the charge level would show as full and then after just a few minutes of play the red light would flash rapidly to signify low battery and I would need to plug it in quickly to prevent the unit shutting down.

Any ideas?

FWIW: The 3DS will not turn on without a battery installed. A broken battery seems like the most likely cause.

See if you can borrow a battery from another 3DS XL owner to test it. (Both Old 3DS XL and New 3DS XL use the same battery; not compatible with Old 3DS, New 3DS, or 2DS.)

Thanks for the responses so far guys.

Just tried a new battery and it's still doing exactly the same thing :(

Have you tried turning it on with no SD card? Have you tried folding a piece of paper in the back between the battery and case?

Did you accidentally slide/forcibly pull the SD card out instead of push-ejecting?

Was there something else that happened that you forgot to mention?

Yes I've tried with no SD card and had the same result.

No I haven't tried the paper technique. I'll give it a go and report back.

Yes I forced the card out... Had no idea it was a push-to-eject slot!

Ummm dude, only the O3DS is a push-eject, the N3ds and N3dsxl are both use your fingernails to eject.

Every 3ds model use the push-eject system. n3ds's microsd slot apparence look like a simple pull system but no.

excuse me? every models are push-eject. You can forcefully pull it out but do that many times and you'll break the spring.
Just checked my o3ds and my n3ds xl, i had to manually remove the micro sd card with my fingernail on my n3ds and push and eject on my o3ds
EDIT: apparently n3ds is also push-eject

I wasn't pushing hard enough. I also eat my fingernails so I guess that could have some connection with not pushing hard enough xD
Well, it is small. Probably why it's tucked into the inside behind the cover, and they offer the ability to wirelessly transmit data to/from your PC though Data Management (I think).

They do let you....wait... wirelesshax confirmed??!?!?!?!?! Maybe we can change the file halfway through and make the 3ds execute it....
