You can send it to Nintendo. Just make it vanilla as possible
This would be the easiest solution. But all kinds of things could go wrong. What if nintendo doesn't fix it, but instead sends me refurbished one? (They did that once with my ds lite when the screen hinge broke) I'd be screwed. Since It would probably have the latest firmware on it.

Oh cool. I'll check this out.

This is terrible. What can I do? I can't send it to nintendo to fix because it's got custom firmware on it.

Holy shit, that's worse than the damage I got!

The rubbery thumbstick on my launch day old 3DS disintegrated, from the years of use, which I read was bound to happen.

but the entire black nub broke off!?

did you force too big a coin under it?

They can do hardware fixes (well it being the analog stick thing) I don't they would.. They shouldn't do at least. I've had one of my XLs repaired due to technical problem and it came back the same one

Don't worry, this literally happened to my 3DS a few weeks ago. How to fix:
1-Buy super glue.
2-Place a single drop on top of the black knob thing that is sticking out. (Enough to cover the top surface of the black knob shown in your image but not enough to ooze around it when doing step 3)
3-Place your circle pad back on top of the black knob. Apply pressure until the glue dries.
4-Enjoy!

Tip: For best results, try to place the circle pad back in the same orientation it was in before breaking. You can do this by making sure the black broken pieces at the bottom of the circle pad fit nice with the odd shape of the black knob before placing the glue.

How the hell did you break it like that?
I don't know man. Probably too much smash bros and Hyrule warriors.

I'm not 100% if you do, as I've not had the problem myself. I've had my O3DS XL since it came out and it's had no problems
I found this

It doesn't look too difficult. I'm still nervous about it though. I suppose I could try the super glue method as well.

The circle pad is VERY easy to replace, just follow a Youtube Guide. I can replace one in less than 10 mins.
