So if I update to 3.60 PSP games won't work. I don't care too much about Vita games yet and I can wait until an official method for psp games on 3.60

So which firmware should I update to and be able to play psp games and emulators? Free method preferred or what is the cheapest? I don't have a PS3 or PS4.

Then you are out of luck because all the existing methods require you to have a PSP game/demo installed on the system, how do you get a PSP game/demo on an old firmware without updating? Download and transfer it using a PS3...

The only outdated firmware that can download a game/free PSP demo without a PS3 is 3.60 and that's because HENkaku spoofs the firmware and can access PSN, I'd suggest you to update to 3.60 and get a free PSP demo installes before PSN access gets patched by Sony or you'll be getting left out m once TheFlow releases his PSP hack.

As mentioned, you absolutely have to have a PS3 to transfer games over. If you don't, you're not going to be able to install any eCFW for ePSP mode.

You can, however, wait a few weeks for TheFlow to release his eCFW for 3.60. His eCFW will give additional perks like better filtering and native right stick support (in some games), and can be installed using any PSP game or demo (as mentioned).

The native hack would also give you better emulators (for the most part), and if you really wanted to use PSP mode emulators VHBL can still be installed on 3.60 as well.

Reportedly, you will need to have a PSP game to use Adrenaline.

So you should update to 3.60 right now (which is a little complicated but doable), then get a free PSP demo to have for Adrenaline, then wait and play pirated Vita games up until Adrenaline comes out.

So any free PSP demo will work? It doesn't have to be a special one that has a save exploit? Would I need a PS1 emulated demo to also use the PS1 emulator?

With this new exploit, any PSP demo/game would work. There's no need for any special save or exploit, as this is being done with help from the native Vita exploit Henkaku. So you would absolutely need to be on 3.60 for this to work.

We don't know about PS1 loading yet, the most TheFlow said was PS1 loading was going to be included and that was it. Whether or not he figured out how to get sound actually working in PSPMode (and being stable, unlike TN-Vs albeit excellent attempt which had some instability and slowdown issues) no one knows. Until TheFlow says anything, assume PS1 games won't run with sound for now.

However, there is a native emulator from Retroarch for PS1 on the Vita now which runs most games at full speed (and they don't look like total ass since they're not being upscaled from 480x272).

Shows how lazy Sony decided to go about the PS Vita playing PS1 games, they spent zero effort making a proper PS1 emulator for the system but rather simply tagged on the PSP compatibility and called it a day...

This is exactly what killed the Vita on the west, lack of support from Sony themselves right from the get go.

You know Tony..Myself and another user was speaking of this in different thread how Sony tanked on the Vita, and dropped support for it like a bad habit. That was another down fall for the PSTV making it incompatible with about 90% of the Vita games. Why this was done on their part I never understood? Why make a HDMI version of the Vita(PSTV) and slap it with a ps3/ps4 controller and ban most of the game play for it?Great little system..poor marketing...

I imagine Sony went for compatibility and speed rather than visual quality. While PCSX rearmed works well, there are a lot of games that don't run too well or have slowdowns during gameplay. If they simply went for better visual quality, people would just complain about slowdowns instead of games looking somewhat bad.

For example, I'm going through Legend of Legaia right now, and the FPS tanks a lot in some areas and during all fights, sometimes down to like 20-30fps if any effects are being used. Even in the overworld you get slowdowns, which shouldn't happen when graphically the game isn't much better looking than FF8 at best.

As for "lack of support", people fail to realize that Sony put out nearly 2 dozen or so first party titles within the first few years of the Vita's release, and most of them were pretty good. The problem was more poor marketing than anything, the only place the Vita really thrived (and continues to, even if it's slowed down a ton) is Japan where mobile gaming is infinitely more popular than anywhere else (hence all the jRPGs and stuff). The PSTV was an attempt to "fix" that lack of interest in the US and EU. Unfortunately, that didn't work out too well since a lot of games required additional input. I do think the incompatibility list for some games are a little dumb though, I think the intern who handled that didn't do too great of a job, but with the anti-blacklist it's not really a problem anymore.

If Sony focused half as much attention on the Vita as they did the PS4, the Vita wouldn't nearly have had as low sales as it does now.

Actually, if you manually update to 3.18, you'll be able to do what you need, no PS3 required.

how do you get a PSP game/demo on an old firmware without updating?

Simple! You just use the PKG Installer! :D

I'll admit, though, being on such a low firmware without a PS3 does put you at a disadvantage. However, getting a PSP demo on there isn't impossible!

Here's a step-by-step:

1.) Manually update your Vita to 3.18:
Being on 1.80 isn't really doing you any good. Homebrew options are limited, and getting the PKG Installer to run is nearly impossible. However, 3.18 is hailed as the "golden" firmware (at least at the moment, until the ePSP hack for Henkaku/3.60 is released).

There's a handy guide right here on GBATemp on how to manually update.

I'll pick out the parts you need to follow out of that thread (credits to Denny64 for the helpful AiO package and update instructions):
Step 1: Download this All in One package on your PC: MEGA
...
Step 7: Open QMCA on the PC => Settings => CMA Protocol Selection MANUAL => CMA Protocol Version FW 3.10
...

UPDATE TO 3.18:

Step 1: Click on Settings => Select Flight Mode => Reboot console

Step 2: Open QMCA and connect the Vita

Step 3: Paste the 3.18 PUP and your regions updatelist into C:\Users\XXXXXX\Documents\PSV Updates

Step 4: Click on Settings => System Update => Update by PC => Update 3.18 is ready to update click next.
Just be sure that all prompts indicate that 3.18 is being installed. If it tells you it is installing a different version, and you proceed, you will install that version!!

2.) Download the PSP demo:
This is the demo that you will be installing to the Vita. It is a .pkg file, and you will need to download this file to the PC (copy and paste the link to your browser):
Code:
ares.dl.playstation.net/cdn/JP0604/NPJH90164_00/nXqnqm5PKphh6RojTASLwABJCDEOpEM6PLsRFMIFOeyc1fiLV1WGYe1R9NExqvwBknHiEqIjnGRySWflU1fx444y57F3dJoT41q4g.pkg

This is the demo of Danganropa. It is a DRM-Free .pkg file, which means the PKG Installer can be used to install it. It won't run, however, but it doesn't have to - it just needs to be installed.

3.) Set up the Mail app:
While you're waiting for the .pkg to download, start setting up the Mail app (go ahead and setup the WiFi on the Vita if you haven't already; as a safety precaution, you may un-tick "Download Update File for System Software" under Settings > System > Auto-Start Settings). Open the Mail app, and log in to an account you can use to receive mail on the Vita. Note that Gmail can be a bit finicky about this, as it detects it as a malicious device for some reason. There is a setting on your Google account you will need to disable in order to log in to Gmail on the Vita, but a quick search should get you sorted out if you encounter this issue. I'm unsure if Yahoo is the same way.

4.) Send the PKG Installer launch email:
On your PC, with your email client/website of choice, compose an email with the following in the body:
Code:
<a href="psgm:open?titleid=NPXS10031">Launch PKG Installer</a>

Send this email to the address the Vita is logged in to.

5.) Prepare the .pkg for installation:
The .pkg file you downloaded earlier should be done by now. And since you should already have QCMA from the manual upgrade to 3.18, you should also already have the correct folder for the .pkg file in your Documents folder.

Move the .pkg file to:
Code:
C:\Users\<yourname>\Documents\PSV Packages

6.) Install the demo:
Now, with the Vita plugged in to the PC, and with QCMA open (don't forget to right-click on the tray icon and refresh the database), open the Mail app on the Vita, find your email, and click on the link. The PKG Installer should launch. Click the option named "Content Manager Assistant," and you should see the .pkg hosted on your computer. Click on it and install it.

7.) Back up the demo:
Finally, open Content Manager on the Vita, and backup Danganropa to the computer. For most ePSP guides, having this backed up is a prerequisite.

That just about covers getting a PSP demo on your Vita without a PS3. From here, you can do almost anything you need. I recommend you check out Hackinformer's awesome Playstation Guide to see all the things you can do. I personally recommend this one.

Have fun!

I gotta thank you for putting in the effort to make the guide ubergeek77. Sadly I followed the advice of people above you and updated to 3.60 last night because I didn't think there was a way and I couldn't find a guide anywhere else on the internet. Hopefully they didn't steer me in the wrong direction and this guy that is making the PSP on Vita CFW ends up not releasing anything.

I see. No worries! I'm excited for Adrenaline to release too, and I have absolutely no doubt it will be here soon.

The FloW just wants to keep teasing for a little while longer that's all

As I read more about the scene it seems the project is in good hands with The Flow but anything can happen with developers that sometimes drop out.

I agree, I'm not worried. Especially when subtle hints are dropped here and there ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

So for what it's worth, it wouldn't have been long before you were upgrading to 3.60 anyway. And nowadays, I can't live without on-demand VitaShell. On 3.18, I had to run Rejuvenate every time I wanted to open it. It was miserable.
