Hey guys, I was wondering how you guys would want to see the Virtual Console end up like on the Switch. I got a pretty lengthy demand, but you don't have to go as in depth as me. :D

Ever since the Wii, every main console and handheld Nintendo put out has had some form of Virtual Console. Every console and handheld has had NES games and PC-Engine/Turbografx-16 games (PC-Engine on 3DS exclusive to Japan), while the consoles also had Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 games.

Every console and handheld has had exclusive software libraries from specific consoles. The Wii had Genesis, Master System, Neo Geo, Commodore 64, and Arcade games exclusive to its VC lineup. The 3DS had portable games such as the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Gear exclusive to its lineup (with New 3DS being the only version of 3DS with SNES games). The Wii U had GBA and DS releases which were exclusive to its lineup (barring the Ambassador only GBA games on 3DS).

If you could follow all of that, then I'm impressed. Virtual Console has had a lot of libraries before but as a whole it's all over the place. I hope that on the Switch we can see every console/handheld library that has been on Virtual Console on the Switch. Handheld games would work great due to the Switch's portable nature, and stuff like Neo Geo and Arcade would be great for the living room. There really shouldn't be any reason for a console/handheld/arcade system that has ever been on Virtual Console to skip the Switch. (And by the way, Wii games on Wii U aren't considered Virtual Console)

I also want to talk about controls. The Wii U VC did something good and had control binding, but with the Switch it'll need to be very in-depth. All these different ways to control the game will make control customization difficult. One way I can see this being solved is by having universal controller layouts that you can set and save yourself. For example, maybe you like using a Joypad for NES games, but you want to change the default layout. Simply change it in the menu, save and name it, and now you have that layout for every NES VC game as an option.

Next up, display options. As far as display options go, Virtual Console has been really inconsistent. Sometimes display options like 240p on the Wii and Perfect-pixel mode for Game Boy games on the 3DS were locked-away by weird button combinations. But other times like GBA games on Wii U and SNES games on New 3DS, display options were simply in the menu. Virtual Console on Switch needs to standardize the display options to just have them always in the menu. The NES Classic Mini has some good display options and a nice menu for them, so I hope that's standard for the Switch.

Another thing, releasing games. Nintendo has been really slow recently with Virtual Console releases, but it's because they believe that this trickle-down form makes games sell better since they stand out as a new release. If this is the case, then Nintendo could easily just have sales on Virtual Console games every week. Maybe give it a theme each week. People will turn on their eShop and see some Virtual Console games on sale, and that pressure of "it'll probably not be cheaper in the future" will usually get people to bite. Hey, it works for Steam!

And finally, pricing. Pricing needs some deduction across the board. For a lot of people the price of Virtual Console games is a bit of a rip off. For the love of god, just make NES games two dollars Nintendo, that's what you're technically pricing them for with the NES Classic Mini! It also shouldn't cost more than a dollar to transfer VC games you bought on another console to the Switch. At this point purchasing games should be tied to an account, so crossbuy should happen in the future.

So what do you guys think?

Nothing really. The VC is a dead horse already.
In any case improvements to the eshop (many that are really needed) that would impact on VC also.
Like unified account, automatic account portability, deals, good related game suggestions, game packages for a discount (like e.g. the 2D Metroid package), etc.
So mostly improvements to the eshop that would impact on VC.

1. Releases in a timely matter. Ideally rely on a standardized emulator then they just need to test game roms before posting them to the eShop
2. Crossbuy by default. The Wii U's discount to $1 for titles you already own is decent enough, but I'd really like to not have to rebuy the games yet again.
3. Cloud save synchronization. I'm getting a teensy bit tired of not being able to bring my progress to my new consoles all the time.
4. The NES Classic's view modes. I'd like the better picture quality, yet being able to switch to CRT mode would be awesome.

What I would like to see in the Switch is improved VC games (if it will be a thing.)

Slow-mo, Fast Forward, Cheats, Save States, all that good stuff.
It's a shame that it's limited.

Well, I decently want a rich VC library with all the consoles that has been on Virtual Console so far, plus a few others like GameCube, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast, and Virtual Boy. I'd also see a good pricing for each generation of consoles, starting with $0.99 with the Game Boy and $1.49 with the NES and GBC, increasing all the way to $9.99 with the GameCube and Dreamcast.

Oh, and a lot of options to choose from too (e.g. screen size, controller settings, save states, screen smoothing, etc.). Kinda like what Sony did with the PS1 Classics on PSP/PS Vita, and the PS1/PS2 Classics on PS3.

All that, being one of my main reasons to buy the Switch when it comes out in March :yayswitch:

I have big hopes for emulation (both official and homebrew) as well.

Let's hope we'll get GameCube, and maybe even Wii.

...and a port of PPSSPP. Damn, that would be amazing.

All that stuff probably won't come with an official emulator.

You'll have to wait for homebrew for these features.

As much as I would like Gamecube VC, is there a controller for the Switch that will have proper L/R buttons? I use alot of half-presses in games like Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime. Other than that, I don't really think there's an excuse NOT to have many more N64 titles, especially around launch time.

Also Wario's Woods SNES, please.

I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.

If you can find enough for it

Toilet paper is considered the money, you collect and buy stuff with TP, kinda funny. Graphics are def better than the other games tho, I think they used Unity 5 engine.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Many of them did before colour television was common.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Likely because black and white TV was in-expensive.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
It certainly wasn't inexpensive it cost the same as a new car back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
How much did a 1965 color TV cost?

For example, a 21-inch (diagonal) GE color television in 1965 had an advertised price of $499, which is equal to $4,724 in today's dollars, according to the federal government's inflation calculator.

@K3Nv2, take into consideration how economy was back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Yeah that's why they listed inflation rates
