If I'm playing a game like normal on my Wii U but with certain URLs blocked off using parental controls on my router how could I ever know if an update is ever needed or if I'm already on the latest?

Also if I play a game using Loadiine does it pull the update data from the Wii U or would I need to manually place the update data on the SD card alongside the game?

In most games, the title screen will show the version number in one of the corners. Look up what the latest version is, and that will tell you.
If the game doesn't tell you the current version, then I'm not sure.

Literally just search it in Google ("GAMENAME Update") and compare with its title screen. If there is no number of version, it probably is 1.00

I imagine NUSGrabber is more reliable than Google since it's a direct connection with the server.

About my other question, if I play a game off Loadiine will it use the update data on the Wii U or do I need to put it on the SD Card with the game? I'd prefer if it were installed so I have more free room on my limited storage of an SD card.

Loadiine needs the update in the SD, not the console memory.
The brazilian method uses the console memory.

don't block tagaya and you'll get the xml with all latest updates. it's downloading it regularly, and on every power on.
If there's an update, the game will prompt you to update.

if you block tagaya servers, then the wiiu will never know that an update is available (a new one from when you blocked that url, old ones will be known) and will launch the game without notice.

http://tagaya-wup.cdn.nintendo.net/
https://tagaya.wup.shop.nintendo.net

example of full url the wiiU is using to check if there's an update:
https://tagaya.wup.shop.nintendo.net/tagaya/versionlist/EUR/EU/latest_version <-- get the latest version of the xml
https://tagaya.wup.shop.nintendo.net/tagaya/versionlist/EUR/EU/list/977.versionlist <--- all previous XML version are online, so you can request specific version number.

https://tagaya.wup.shop.nintendo.net/tagaya/versionlist/<region>/<lang>/latest_version
https://tagaya.wup.shop.nintendo.net/tagaya/versionlist/<region>/<lang>/list/<version>.versionlist
region/lang : EUR/EU, USA/US, JPN/JP

Of course, if you want to block it, you can do it.
You'll have to check tagaya manually with your computer to know if there's an update for your game, or use a program like JNUStool (passive) or any other with an active update database (WiiU USB Helper).
What I have noticed is that the game itself is not always blocking you from playing outdated version. I completed XenobladeX with v1.0 and played online without issues, and never updated to v1.1 because the console didn't know about it. But the game let me connect online with v1.0
