I have a new 3ds xl, modded with all steps of plailects guide.

What do I have to do, to play a ds rom? Somehow convert it to a cia? Or do I have to start it in a ds mode like the vwii of a wii u?

Thank you for your help.

Go buy one of these. They're cheap and very effective.

R4i Gold SDHC 2016: http://imgur.com/vYit0vv

They can be purchased from the GBATemp suggested flash cart retailers.
Please don't suggest that cart.
I seriously suggest the R4i Gold (r4ids.cn) it officially runs Wood R4 and is basically the most accepted unofficial R4 upgrade.

That one will give you cooties.

Indeed. It works fantastic, almost orgasmic. I have one and am a better pirate because of it.

Cooties how? I've had it for months and the 2014 version for a few years before I got this one. I've never had a problem with it. In fact, the 2014 version is still in my brothers DS and working fine.

I'm genuinely curious.

Do you have a decent smartphone? If so, it emulates DS perfectly.

or not. Lack of physical buttons on most phones makes this a non-starter for most people, and I wouldn't consider the emulation to be "perfect" by any stretch of the imagination. For the moment, your best choice is to get a flash cart, or sit tight and hope for the best for nds rom loading within cfw (it is coming, though it may yet take some time, and probably won't be perfect right out the gates).

EDIT: Frame of reference, the list of open issues with the nds emulator commonly used in retroarch:

Have been playing it for more than a year with a cheap physical attachable controller. small, good grip, comfortable buttons, i was really surprised. About the emulator part itself, it plays perfectly everything i throw at it, from Fire Emblem, Golden Sun, radiant storia to Mario, Kirby and almost every Nintendo AAA, no freezes, glitches or Sound problems so far. Also use it to emulate persona 3 on psp and im getting near the end of what i would describe as my best playthrough (have played it on ps2, psp and vita). It runs beatifuly on 1080p. Also, my best Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon and first game (gba) runs have been here. Dont know, could be the fact that i have a massive work and the phone is just convenient.

I think buying a cheap flashcart or wait for DSi Mode hack is more easier and better.
Don't have your phone battery drain by emulating console games.
I think it depends. When you want to keep gaming but have to work a 24h shift, its better to have a one device to emulate everything, speaking out of experience. But if you have the time and cant recharge, of course, the console is better. Its also how it was supposed to run in the first place, nothing can top that. Just giving options.

I'm a bit confuse here. If you have 24 working shift, isn't it more important to keep your phone battery power as much as possible?
Well, In my opinion, It's up to a person taste. I have iPhone SE with much equally to 6S, I'm still carry 3DS/PSP/PSVita with me when I'm going out.
But, I know som people would rather keep everything in single device. So It's up to a person taste.

The reason I told you that OP better buying a flashcard is because:
  • He already has a console which capable of doing this.
  • And he already wants to play it on this console, hence why he creating this thread.
  • Also, this is an 3DS forums.
That's why I think buying a cheap flashcart or wait for DSi Mode hack is more easier and better for him.

Its not just important, its crucial. Thats why i said "IF you cant recharge", wich i can, even at work. Anyway, i dont think this is worth discussing as, well, its not important at all. He asked a question, he doesn't have a flashcard, i gave an option. whether he think its was a good one or not, its up to him. He can download it and test, buy a flashcard... What matters is if he is enjoying and happy with it

Buy a NDS flashcart and use this to forward straight from the 3DS homemenu.

I have a DSTWO cart for playing DS + GBA games. Since I installed A9LH and stopped using my Gateway cart the DSTWO is permanently in the 3DS slot and I have installed a bunch of forwarders on the 3DS menu. Works like a dream.
