I heard ysmenu can get around some of these incompatibility issues. So.... I have no idea what it is, where to get it, or how to install it. I use the r4i 3.8 firmware for clarification. Tell me if i need to provide more info.
issue is i have the r4 dual-core one, that looks like this,It was the equivalent of Homebrew Launcher for DS. Was an alternate launcher that solves certain problems with games, but mostly with homebrew apps.
If you have an R4/R4i (which you have), go for WoodR4 and done.

Would i be able to keep my real time saving feature?
just got mine, so im assuming im running the latest version of it. Is there a way i could load the .dat file from within my r4i firmware? If you switch to WoodR4, i doubt it. Have you tried to update the kernel?

so that will completely overwrite my current firmware? No, because the .dat (_DS_MENU.dat) file is loaded on boot. Technically is possible, hence the launchers, but for multiple kernels it requires a kernel that resets the R4i to load again when a kernel is selected, but that doesn't exist or i'm not aware of that.
And since your R4i is a clone, the WoodR4 kernel may not work. So your only bet is to use YSMenu.dat. http://www.r4wood.com/news/106/R4DS-YSMenu-Firmware-for-R4-DS-from-WWW.R4DS.ME.html
Then how would i run the .dat file?
Booting any .nds file with ysmenu gives me the error "Unsupported DLDI Name"Have you followed the link i posted? http://www.r4wood.com/news/106/R4DS-YSMenu-Firmware-for-R4-DS-from-WWW.R4DS.ME.html
You need TTMenu folder and YSMenu.nds. The last one is the file you seek to launch YSMenu.

im looking into this: https://gbatemp.net/threads/ysmenu-on-r4i-sdhc-dual-core-2015.395883/Try this guide to see if can be fixed. I readed more and seems that even YSmenu don't work properly on clones.
Also, disable the "autopatching" option on YSMenu.
If nothing helps then try to install a foreign kernel like WoodR4.
