I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I wanted to check. A friend of mine sent in his 3DS for service and kept the SD card himself. He got back a new unit on a new NAND, so none of his SD content is recognized by the new system. Redownloading software is not an issue, but is there any homebrew or PC utility method to recover his previous saves? I've got a full Luma A9LH 3DS at my disposal to help, but all the methods I know to extract and restore saves require being on a NAND that is tied to those saves.

Many thanks to anyone who knows anything worth knowing about this.

He didn't have a NAND backup?

If your buddy didn't get his SD stuff back, the movable.sed must have been lost. Part of what that file is responsible for is the encryption of the system's installed CIAs and their save data, as well as system extra data. A similar thing happened to me with my old system. NAND was fried, presumably after Ninty mucked up a charger port repair. But this movable.sed is actually sent to Nintendo's servers when you connect to them. It's also a unique identifier. (When you System Transfer, the encryption hash is moved over, but altering any part of it yourself is not a good idea)

The difference between me and your friend is that my SD data still worked. If your mate had an NNID, try asking Nintendo if they can fix this problem you're having.

That must be rough. Productive I'm sure but hard to balance with daily life

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.

@Maximumbeans, I had a friend who had a glass chess set for their birthday.

It was like all clear and fancy. Tbf I'm not too experienced with chess, but would like to learn someday.

    That sounds really cool
