Hi, I'm a longtime Nintendo fan but I've never become a member of an online fan club. I bought a new 3DS XL today and it looks very unique. I can't find any information anywhere online about anything similar so here I am! I don't really know where to go online to get more information. If there's a better place for me to post online, please let me know. I don't want to be in the wrong place posting my personal questions if it isn't allowed.

I bought, what I thought was a brand new 3DS XL from Gamestop earlier today. Well, it has what looks like a skyward sword sticker on it? It really doesn't look like a sticker but actually a part of the 3DS itself. It came packaged similar as my other 3DS but it has an extra plastic shrinkwrap type covering. I can't find this particular 3DS anywhere online. So I'm thinking it's a refurbished unit maybe? I just don't want to take off the plastic until I find out if it's something special or did I just get someones old refurbished unit sold as new? I'm going to try to include some photos for reference. Thanks for your help!

Yeah, I'm thinking it's someone's custom job. I don't even think they made that particular game for the 3DS. I actually like how it looks but I'm probably taking it back because I paid for a NEW 3DS and this definitely isn't one. Thank you for your help!

There is no (limited) edition of that kind of 3DS.
There are some zelda ones, but nothing like that.

Btw, you asked for a New 3DS XL, and you have one
If you asked for a new (as a adjective) there are several models Original/Old 3DS and New 3DS

https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Device-Info

This link above shows generic images of New 3DS, New 3DS XL, Old 3DS, Old 3DS XL in that order

Can you see the firmware version? Maybe it is on a hackeable version (and if it's in a good condition, well than you have a unique console)

He said he bought it as brand new, which this obviously is not. It looks nice enough, but it's not what he wanted to buy.
So he has a point.

I understood what he said, but the guy in the shop maybe didn't
I dont know how gamestop works, but the thing is, you can't (or shouldn't; again, I don't know how gamestop works) sell a refurbished / second hand item at full retail price and not inform a customer about it, that's just a dick move on their end then.
But that's up to OP to resolve with gamestop. If he paid full price for a not so brand new one (even though it looks nice), then he has his right to go back.
If that's what happened, of course.

I don't know it either and I'm not here to discuss that too xD
As you said, that's the OP to resolve. I'm only here to help him if I can.

As you can notice, English is not my native language (I know well the language, but I'm not fluent), so sometimes I just misinterpret what I read... I'm sorry for that, to both, OP and you.

Do you want to hack your 3ds or do you want to sell?

Good point, I did pay for a brand new, NEW NINTENDO 3DS. Not a newly used, NEW NINTENDO 3DS. I paid full price :/

I've never hacked a 3DS (really didn't know ya could)
So, I'll just be trading this one back to Gamestop for a new, NEW NINTENDO 3DS. Is there something I should be looking for? Just in case I'd change my mind and would want to "hack" my 3DS in the future? What kind of firmwhare are we looking for? Thanks

Look for a 3DS with ver. 10.7 or lower (it's harder to hack if 11.0 or 11.1)

OK, here's the thing. The model number is "MOD. RED-001". So I took this back to Gamestop today and they said they do not sell refurbished units as new units. They were actually pretty surprised that I'd accuse them of such. So they called in to Nintendo to do a "system transfer" (he said he wasn't really going to do a system transfer but that was the best/easiest way to check) to see who had registered the serial number. It's never been registered at all. At this point, the Gamestop dude became pretty interested in this thing and was "more than willing" to trade it in for a new system that didn't have the engraving. Needless to say, I'm keeping it for now to see what I can figure out, if anything, about this particular system. Thank you all for you help and welcoming! I will be back often to chat, especially if I figure something out about this.

Can you please take a photo of the model number? (I think that if you screw off the back plate there will be the real serial number
That custom model probably means MODified RED New 3DS - the first of it's kind

Ok, well I was directed to a local Nintendo expert from my similar post I made on facebook. The guy says it "Most Definitely" is NOT an official Nintendo mod and more than likely was put on after it was made at some point. He is checking to see if he can figure out the exact date of manufacture. If it lines up with the Wii U announcement of Skyward Sword on Virtual Console, there may be something there. But he said 99.9% sure it is not official Nintendo :( But now that I know that it's never been registered before, I'm not too worried about it being a refurbished unit. He also said the "MOD. RED-001" is normal on all New Nintendo 3DS XL's. So while it's pretty interesting to me, there's really nothing special about this at all.
