Hacking bought r4 card, no idea how to set up, shows ? Menu

So i got an r4 card, specifically R4 3ds upgrade dual-core, which looks like this:

Now when i boot it up, get the word menu, showing a question mark. I get i need firmware files, but how does that all work? I understand the 3ds scene extremely well but im foreign to ds

Do you mind telling me the EXACT website that your cards refers to? aka .com, .hk. cn etc etc

if you mean where i got it, r43ds.org, though if you look on the fine print on the back it reads in tiny letters "www.r4isdhc.com"

Ill asume your primary language its English so here it goes:
http://www.r4isdhc.com/KerneDownload/R4i-V3.8b English.zip

download that file, unzip it on the root of your MICRO SD card which has to be fat or fat32, both of them work, i suggest fat32, and that's it.

Would like to warn you that the card you bought is a time bomb meaning it won't work after a year. Your only options are to buy a new one after a year or set you date back on your 3ds.

Okay. I think as long as you don't use the extra ones you will be fine. Not sure.
(Never had more then one of those)

False, these cards are just clones of clones, i got one 2013 up and running, as well as a 2014 and a 2015, 0 issues, there are some, that the kernel has an expiration date, but the fix for them its just rewind the date.

ok lastly..... running portalds results in a freeze, making me think i have to load it with the hbmenu, is there a link to that at all?
