Hi,

I have a 3DSXL with a Gateway cart that I haven't updated for about 2.5 - 3 years.

I have no idea what to do next, it's been too long. Is there a step by step guide I can follow?

I have always had wifi turned off and I've never played an original game so I'm on a pretty old firmware, is it safe to go to the latest firmware yet?

Also my battery life pretty much sucks with the current version I'm running, was that something that was fixed?

Do I still need to go in to settings / Profile to switch to Gateway mode in the latest version or has that been simplified ?

Thanks !

OK, so let me break it down to you briefly. Nowadays GW cards have mostly been made obsolete by free CFWs which auto boot directly when your power the 3DS on. So unless you want GW's cheat engine (the only one which works online) and you're willing to install games as CIAs, then I'd recommend you to follow this excellent guide:

depends
you have several options available:
- gateway + homemenuhax
- cfw + a9lh (no more using gateway)
- cfw + homemenuhax

and for sure, you don't need to go to settings to run gateway mode
the simplest one I can suggest is to install homemenuhax so you can automatically run gateway on boot

What SomeGamer was referencing at the beginning of his post is an exploit called "Arm9LoaderHax". Essentialy, with this exploit, you can load Arm9 payloads immediately after pressing the power button (less than a second). And if you haven't caught on, this allows you to load CFWs incredibly quickly, with a 100% boot rate, and many other advantages, such as being able to restore from a hard brick (via booting into Decrypt9 before the NAND loads up and flashing a NAND backup - oh, and make a new NAND backup with Decrypt9, and trash your Gateway backup). Follow the link SomeGamer provided you for installation instructions.

EDIT:

gateway + a9lh (or as they called gateway fastboot)
DO. NOT. USE. GATEWAY. FASTBOOT. UNDER. ANY. CIRCUMSTANCES.

Never mention Gateway's Crapboot. It is the worst option you can use.

if you are going to continue using your gateway card for cheats as i do the latest supported firmware is 9.2 and the gateway mode emunand can be updated all the way to 11.1 the newest firmware. there is also gateway 4.2 beta i believe available for download on the gateway site. make sure to grab the latest launcher.dat so you have full capabilities on 11.1

Or use AuroraWright's A9LH with GW's bin. I still wouldn't recommend it, but better than being locked to GW. But it's important to note you can't update sysNAND in GW's A9LH, no matter if it's loaded directly by their A9LH build or by their arm9 payload.

yeah I know
actually what I was suggesting is to use plailect guide to install a9lh and use gateway afterwards, never use gateway downgrade method. never tried this myself but I seems to find report that this would work

Why have you done the guide yet? It only takes an hour on the old 3ds and 20 minutes o the new 3ds. (new 3ds doesn't even need otp meaning no 2.1 downgrade)

Wow, i can't believe how much things have changed, this is really confusing for someone that hasn't had to touch it in so long.

I never use cheat codes, never will. Does that narrow down the suggestion on which route to take? Is there a clear consensus on which is the best route if no cheats are necessary?

I just looked at my 3DS to see my firmware, it is 4.4.0-10U and my GW is at the same version.

Hopefully that info will make it easier to make a suggestion on which route to go.

Thanks

then we would all recommend https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki if you arent going to use cheats. its really the only thing a gateway is good for anymore

NEVER USE FASTBOOT OR GATEWAY TIME MACHINE! THEY ARE BROKEN AND RISK BRICKING YOUR 3DS!
I can not stress that enough.

Honestly, I wouldn't even suggest continuing to use Gateways when free CFWs are just better. Sure they don't support .3DS rom and cheat support is questionable, but they are still leaps and bounds more up to date and the countless other features outweigh the two features they lack.

I really suggest checking out my thread on the most up to date CFWs

And checking out A9LH

Yeah, since I have a New3DS, I easily made the switch with Plailect's guide yesterday, got rid of my emunand too, but boy is the "are you sure you want to boot GW sysnand?!" nag on bootup ANNOOOOYING. Anybody tried to ask GW to make a version with it remove for ppl who know they should update only via Luma ?
My sysnand is on the latest fw, I doubt I can use the 3.7.2 or 4.0a launcher.dat with the latest sysnand, can I ?

please clarify something for me
is it only the downgrade method (time machine) broken, or even the fastboot implementation also broken even if you setup a9lh using plailect guide?
I was suggesting the latter though, not the time machine part

only play 3ds when I travel nowadays, and since I still have the perfectly working gateway/cakes + homemenuhax installed since months so I never bother to use it :P might consider doing that when I get the time

Gateway fastboot locks you into their card meaning you break/lose the card your 3ds is a brick.

i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.

i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways
