FTP is fairly fast, MicroSD management(built-in on n3ds installable on others) is stable but IMHO fastest is the SD in the SD Reader method. I too hate screws. So I removed them. Then I got a HORI duraflexi Case. Its clear and flexable so its super easy to take on and off. The battery cover itself holds on pretty well without screws then I put the duraflexi case over it and its solid. No more screws.

who is this fruitcake?

but people are saying it is dangerous?
anyway, yes, everyone agrees that the micro sd card should be easily accessible... and it's a pain now...
however you got several solutions.
use ftp or micro sd card management...
buy a new faceplate with an hole\modification. (not sure if theese already exist)
if you are crafty, make a hole on the sd card.. if you don't like the hole, maybe you can come up with an idea to cover the hole and start to sell theese custom faceplates?

How is using it on your own local network insecure? Moreso, what damage could somebody do to a 3DS by MitMing the transfers?
It's insecure because it's not encrypted, not password protected, and uses WiFi. An attacker could do pretty much anything to your 3DS if they have ftp access by replacing your executables with ones injected with malware. Setting up a bricking device that permanently bricks any 3DS in WiFi range with ftp running would fairly trivial, but I doubt someone would bother.
