Alright I may FINALLY have a PS4 this holiday season, so my questions are, what do I do? I heard of the play station network, and all these different accessories and this attachment and this thing and that thing you can buy for it. So whats the right and wrong thing to do when owning this console and being a newbie to it?

You get the PS4 slim, cheapest most slick version and it comes with either NHL or Uncharted 4 to start you off (Uncharted is AMAZING btw). And then if you want online features, get a subscription to the playstation network.

With the playstation network (which is their online service, which you get by subscribing) is IMO not worth the money, because of it's extremely high price. It gets you some free games which are mostly not the greatest (they are random mostly cheap games sony picks out) and you get some discounts in the playstation store. That's the only thing you will need/want to sign up too. You also have to make an account when you first get your PS4, it's what you are known by online and such!

Does creating a new account cost money? And do I really need a PSN account in order to buy games off the PS Store?
It costs no money, and I am not sure if you need one but I am guessing you will and it makes everything so much easier and better, it also has benefits to it, anyway you NEED to make one to sign into your PS4 each time!

this is a great time to get into ps4

the hardware has proven solid. biggest issues are HDMI ports failing and launch controllers with peeling analog sticks or sticky triggers. not an issue if you are buying the new slim. just watch out for dust accumulation near air intakes.

the game library is mature and varied. you will find many great games used, cheap. i have not paid more than 25 CAD for any ps4 game.

playstation plus is required for online play in almost every game.

the future looks good for ps4 and now is the time to get in.

edit, if you buy from ebay they give a FREE 2nd controller

-You create an account when you get it, giving you access to PSN (Playstation Network). That's free, and that's how you get credit for achievements, purchases, etc. It's your account, and isn't tied to that specific console. You can even add that account to other PS4 and go between the two of them, with your achievements/purchases working on both.

-to use online in games, you have to "upgrade" your account to PSN+. It's a monthly subscription (cheapest if you buy a year at a time). There are some..ahh...less savory ways of getting it for free, but I won't get into that here.

-Unless you're wanting to play a game's online aspect, PSN+ isn't needed.

-If you get PSN+, the benefits are accessible to any other account that is on that particular PS4. For example: you buy PSN+ for a year. Your roommate, who doesn't have PSN+ but whose account is on your ps4, can then also play online games.

-Your controllers will recharge using "micro-b" USB cables. Just an FYI, in case you want more usb/ac cables to charge your controllers

-Get a ps4pro if you have a 4k TV or want to play VR(Virtual Reality), ps4slim if you don't care about 4k/VR/potentially smoother frame rates

-If you have a data-cap on your internet, watch out when installing/buying new games. Nearly everything requires loads of downloads to start (If you come from xbox world, you already know this part)

-1st gen ps4 universal remote is practically unusable. 2nd gen ps4 universal remote is good.

-I don't know about any other accessories

I own a [standard] PS4 with the PS Camera, Gold Wireless Headset, another controller (red), the vertical stand, and a 5-port USB hub from Best Buy. I have prepaid my PS+ for two years due to the price increase. In the said hub, I normally have the USB cord for the headset and DS4 (and as I am currently on my PS3 backlog, another cable for the DS3), a flash drive with my multimedia on it, and the Lego Dimensions toypad. It has a 2.5" Seagate 2TB drive; read up about upgrading the drive. I have a Toshiba 3TB exFAT-formatted external for 1:1 console backups, as that is needed for drive upgrades.
Going for aesthetics? It's your choice: decals for your PS4 and lightbar, the DS4 and lightbar, and headset.

You need a psn account for just about anything on the ps4. It does not cost any money at all, and will never do. You need one to purchase games digitally, but not on disk.

Ps plus is something you will need to use online features of any game (except for games like warframe and the elder scrolls online, because these games are online only, and cannot be played without an internet connection and psn access. That means you don't need ps plus for them). You also get 2 (or more) "Free" games every month. They are considered free, but when your ps plus subscription stops, you can no longer play them. If choose to get a new subscription of ps plus later, you can just continue playing those games. You also get exclusive discounts on the ps store with ps plus.

The games that you buy from the ps store (Discount or not doesn't matter), are yours to keep forever, and will never "expire" if your ps plus subscription stops.

(I reccomend trying out warframe, because it's free, and fun if you play it for some hours, and not just the beginning)

Are you telling me if I got a PS4 I could play online matches in Overwatch without playstation plus?

Should of built a pc instead.Ps4 has decent exclusives and even more exclusives to be coming soon but that's roughly it.Mixing 3rd party into a console with exclusive titles as its main strength is kind of hard and controversial because of the 30fps lock on most games there. My advice would be to try and avoid 3rd party on ps4,stick to the exclusives on there and save up for a pc where you get 3rd party at 60fps with limitless external mod support.
