my BC ps3 most likely died, i sent it for reball about 1 month ago, but i didnt get news yet... i am figuring that reball was unsuccessful...

anyway, i was thinking in buying a PS2 (it was my plan before choosing to get the ps3)
and of course i will get a fat model so i can shove an hdd inside and fill it up with gamez
i already got a 32MB memor 32 card with freemc installed (best card eva, got a usb port to manage saves in pc)

i had a PS2 slim back in 2000 and something, which i really hated, that slim laser died out, i changed the laser and then it got ruined by a thunderstorm...

the thing is, there are loads of revisions (SCPH-10000, SCPH-15000, SCPH-18000 etc...)
anyone got a comparation list or know the differences of the different models and what should i choose?
is there difference on the laser? like, later models got a more reliable laser...
i know that at some point the I.link port was removed, could it be used for anything else than ps2 to ps2 connection?

wikipedia got a good article on the PS1 but the PS2 article isn't that great

Laser shouldn't be an issue as you're going to use a HDD anyway ;p
No, that port was for PS2 connection only, I've never came across anything else on the web with it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I never found anything about it.

Anyway, if you do get a phatty, use HDL server and HDL dump helper GUI.
Before you start HDL server, start up an FTP server in uLaunch elf, that will spin up the HDD and allows you to connect to the HDD with HDL dump GUI.
The speed (both on wired internet) is around 2.5 MB/s.

i plan to get an official one from sony, from ebay or in local second hand shops
does aliexpress sells third party adapters or official ones?

i have some offical games, which i would enjoy to use them so they are not just abandoned in the shelf, i also have some recorded discs..
and it can take a while until i get the broadband adapter and hdd, i have a friend which has an abandoned 400 gb IDE hdd, but i recall when i saw it, it's that brand that has issues fitting in the ps2... (i don't remember which now but either seagate or wd)
heh, and i like to own "perfectly working" stuff... in case i decide to get rid off it later, i don't have to put the "laser is dead" part...

i know only a few games support the I.link port. you could hook up 2 ps2 to 2 tv's and play multiplayer games instead of split screen, i don't see use for that in my case, recent revisions got the IR for the remote..
sadly there is not much info about the ps2 revisions..
i will try to get a latter model, hopefully the later models are better at power management and better lasers..

anyway, can't i remove the hdd, and connect it on my pc to copy the games or it's the same problem that the ps3 has (encripted disk, unknown partition)

Fair enough.
I do share that urge to have everything "perfectly working"
Except for Sony consoles for some odd reason ;/

Anyway, you can take out the HDD and connect it to a PC but as I recall, the BBA's don't really like that.

Wouldn't go any later than a v7 for discs. Last fat that didn't suffer from the Mechacon crashing and killing the laser.
this is the kind of info i wanted, thanks!

v7, translates to which model codes?
got more information like that?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Amazon has official ones for like $4 Used Network Adapters if you live inside the US
sadly i live on europe... hopefully i can get an official one for less than 20 bucks, don't really care about being used as long as it works and doesn't have teeth marks

39000X. Last digit is just region, I'm not sure what the last digit is in EU (1 is NA, 3 is UK, I think 4 might be EU).

And no, there is nothing else really revelant. Other stuff is just opinions (what lasers are good/bad etc), but there's no major issues with anything below V7. I would just go with a V7 due it to it being a later model, so newer, so a better chance of getting one that has a decent laser still.

I run an SCPH50001 (silver) with a matrix infinity and the laser is fine, been using it for years, however most of the games were copied to the hard drive once i installed a hard drive. I copied 40 games in one day through the disc drive and it's still works a treat :) Very reliable model.

I can only contribute about 2 points :

- don't pick a clone NA : even the better ones doesnt match with SONY standards and you sould be experiencing issues with them. Im not even talking about the other, just horrible...
- nobody mentionned something important : any model below 50k has a very loud fan - which has been replaced after in the 50k serie with a quieter one. I had a 30004R once a time - damn, it was just too loud, just like an helicopter or something.

If you really want strong advice about which model to pick, consider joigning ASSEMblergames - SP193 or I_Oliveira will most likely answer your questions.
