So, a long time ago, I hacked my friend's n3ds for cakes a9lh. It hasn't shown any problem until very recently. He probably dropped it or one of his kids tampered with it. Here are some things that I did to it:

  1. Installed cakes (would have done Luma but that wasn't out then)
  2. Installed BootAnim9
That is about all that I installed on it. Recently, whenever he turns it on, it shows the blue LED and then cuts off, unlike the usual where it fades out, it just stops. He is very concerned as currently he doesn't have the money for a new one. I tried the following:
  • Pressing a button when it boots to launch Dec9 and such
  • Taking out and putting back in the battery
  • Taking out and putting back in the microSDHC card (16GB)
nothing starts and as I have been out of the scene a while I definitely do not know how to fix this. He is requesting it by tomorrow so I am working on a limited time schedule. Any assistance is useful.

Download the latest version of Luma and put the arm9loaderhax.bin on the root of your as card and see if it boots?

If it turns on and off the sdcard wasn't detected. If it turns on and stays on, the arm9loaderhax.bin file is missing or has a issue. You should replace it with a fresh file cause it can be corrupted. Why cakes, i dunno, but perhaps use luma now it is a thing by popular demand.

Since you said you are usin bootanim9 Download the file again and replace it on the sd card root. Then download the luma and put it in the folder called "Ainm" then rename it "arm9payload.bin" It should fix the problem.

Not true. Turning on then off means it can't find arm9loaderhax.bin, whether because the file is corrupted, the SD is corrupted, or the SD is not inserted. Turning on and staying on (without the SD inserted to make sure it's not a menuhax thing) means the console is bricked.

Really? Cause someone with a bricked console shows it has a blue screen with boot error.

Have you tried turning on the system with the sd card inserted without arm9loaderhax file on there?

I meant turning on and staying on with black screens

Blue screens have nothing to do with a9lh. That's either because you have a hardmod, or have been bricked by Gateway.
I mean, blue screens are a general bootrom error, whether that's your NAND can't be found (hardmod or hardware issues), the NAND is locked with a password (GW), the NAND NSCD header is corrupted (can be anything, really) doesn't matter.

A brick due to a9lh in unlikely to cause a bootrom error, though, unless somehow both FIRM0/FIRM1 are corrupt :P

My ds turned off when i renamed it to arm9loaderhaxa.bin.

@blujay try restoring a nand backup, and try replacing bootanim9 with the cakes/luma payload for now.
yep. If he has A9LHv2, doesn't that have issues with BootAnim9?

Sorry all of you for taking some time to reply, but this is still a problem. Here is what I did and know of what I did to install. On his 3ds I installed a9lh v1 (i believe) because I installed it back in April or something. He says he hasn't touched anything like dev apps except for cia installers. And I managed the cias he installed. I told him to do monthly backups on his NAND, but he didn't listen. So now here we are.

No nand backup or anything. This is his SD card (after I did what people said and got rid of BootAnim9) and I tried the arm9payload thing with luma in the anim folder. I know that he used to have a arm9bootloader on his SD card and I have no idea if that meant anything. I can try and find it but if it was created with his OTP then he deleted his OTP because I cannot find it. When I gave it back he told me to delete all files of his system on my computer and I did so. He needs it back by tomorrow and I will be back at about 3 (Arizona time)

He's probably using an old build of a9lh where that did happen.
