Hey guys, appreciate the advice in advance.

I have a new 3ds XL with 10.7 firmware. Just got it. Haven't put my NNID on it, only played Mario Land 3d. I bought a 64gb micro sd card and formatted it to FAT32 last night. About to tackle the Phailect guide, but some parts scared me.

In the "9.2.0 downgrade" section of the instructions (https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/9.2.0-Downgrade), a few parts really worry me, below. Namely seems like a lot of trial and error - it literally says "try again, can take many times" in number 7.

How likely will it brick my 3ds? I'm terrified of running into stuff unexpectedly that the guide doesn't cover, I won't know what to do.
  1. Boot into the Homebrew Launcher (if you followed the previous part, you can do this by holding D-Pad down on boot)
  2. Open sysDowngrader
  3. Press (Y) to downgrade to 9.2.0
  4. If you are stuck being unable to acquire the am:u service, power off your 3DS by holding the power button and try again (this can take many tries)
  5. Wait; do not touch anything even if it appears to freeze
  6. If, after around 30 seconds, it is still frozen, it is safe to power off and try again
  7. If you get an error before installation, power off your 3DS by holding the power button and try again (this can take many tries)
  8. If you get an error in the middle of installation, follow the instructions in the beginning for partial downgrades
  9. If you freeze on the "Rebooting in 10 seconds" line for longer than 10 seconds, it is safe to power off your 3DS by holding the power button
  10. Navigate to /Nintendo 3DS/(32 Character ID)/(32 Character ID)/extdata/00000000/ on your SD card
    • EUR Region: Delete 00000098
    • JPN Region: Delete 00000082
    • USA Region: Delete 0000008f
    • KOR Region: Delete 000000A9
    • TWN Region: Delete 000000B1
  11. Reinsert your SD card into your 3DS and boot
  12. If you still get a black screen after downgrading and deleting the folder, follow this troubleshooting guide

Also, once you get homebrew and everything working, I haven't seen anything about how to load on the emulators and where to place the roms. Any instructions on that?

Thanks!

The chances of a brick are basically zero if you format the 3ds before downgrading, and we are not allowed to help you pirate

You're not allowed to provide links to copyright material, you ARE allowed to tell him HOW to use the emulator/ROMS he got himself.

He's not asking for help with piracy just where to put the ROMs, which can be anywhere on the SD as far as I know.

The guide covers everything and has plenty of troubleshooting guides if you should run into any problems. Just follow everything it says and you won't brick your system.

Format the 3ds before downgrading?

Is that covered in the guide?

I'm just worried about the parts that are like "if it doesn't work, just keep trying over and over"

Yes it is covered, but more like a side note (the yellow writing on top of the guide), instead of a necessary step

Keep trying, etc is due to the nature of the exploit. Depending on the homebrew entry method it may or may not trigger properly.

Some say format, i personally never format.

A tip for not bricking/needing to update to 11.0 in safe mode:
Whatever you do, if something happens, and the guide doesn't cover it, ASK FOR HELP. (and read the troubleshooting section, of course)

I've seen far too many posts of "Oh woe is me, I had to upgrade to 11.0 because I didn't do X and the guide didn't have Y, so I whinged it, and now I'm sad", don't be one of those people.

Where is the best place to ask these sorts of questions? This board?

I'm legit nervous. I added homebrew to my Wii, and had all sorts of problems, and the process was way simpler than the new 3ds.

These forums work, though I recommend keeping your questions to a single thread (Lots of people create 20 threads, one for each question they have, it clutters the board).

The process really isn't too hard, especially these days. Expect to set aside an hour or two to get through it. When I did it, it was a full day process, with 5+ NAND backups, lots of thumb twiddling and praying that it didn't break, you guys have it good these days :)

Excellent. I totally understand about not clogging up the board with threads. I will keep it to this thread. Thanks.

Have you started yet? If not, consider downloading the whole guide and all files needed in one go from my webpage -> quantumc.at.

Don't worry about it too much, it really is very straight-forward. As Drakia said, f you come across an instruction that seems ambiguous or something happens that's not covered in the troubleshooting section, just ask (this thread or noob's paradise thread).

I installed arm9loaderhax twice in the past two days. With this computer, loading each "part" of the guide and THEN downloading a file THEN reloading the page to download another file took me an hour or two each time.

A link that downloads all the files at once is a godsend.

Ok, I know nothing about you, but let's talk (and I was just in Atlanta last weekend!).

How much to hardmod, and what are the advantages over the al9h hack?
Hardmod is a safety feature more or less. Its a small port installed in the 3ds, it gives direct read and write access to the nand. So, in your case, you would make a backup of the nand via hardmod and pc. Than proceed with the arm9loaderhax install. If at anytime you brick, you restore the nand via hardmod and pc. Start over again.
