How could you calculate something like this?

Based on initial rrp? Based on game you downloaded to try before you would or wouldn't have bought anyway? Based on repetedly downloading the same files?

Ive had a computer since I was 16... I'm now 35... I copied Amiga games when I was in primary school... It's incalculable.

Realistically, nothing, as I wouldn't have bought any game I have pirated. Figuratively, though, some thousand dollars I guess. My parents used to buy me burned ps1 discs and bootleg snes cartridges when I was a kid

the amount is simply if the sofware, that was pirated was bought. One of the problems with calculating the loss, for the company's would be.
How many of the people, would have bought the software if it could not be pirated.

Does pirating and then buying it, because you liked it also count? If not a few tens of thousand, if yes a few thousand more.
it's hard to know because you can pirate a game that costed 50 bucks in the first months and then you buy it for 3 bucks on sale 1-2 years later. technically you bought the game, but now at a reduced price and you had been playing it when it was full price, so how can this be calculated?

if the game costed 50 bucks at release, you pirate it and then purchase it later from the company for 50 bucks, this doesn't count..

i own games that i pirated the shit out of them, purchased the game later at the full price because i really enjoyed, and i wanted a real copy.. because i already played the game, it's shoved on the desk almost as new...
so in this situation, you can say i didn't actually pirate the game.. in the real world, it had the same result, my wallet got -50 bucks, and company got 50 bucks

It's really hard to calculate.
If one where to download the entire NES library right now, they pirated a total of 0 (insert currency unit)

Fact is, for many systems, games aren't being produced and sold anymore (except used or in 2nd hand gamestores)
So giving an accurate figure is really hard.

plus for the company pockets it doesn't matter if you pirate it or get the game from your neighborhood when they stop selling the game..
in this case, the company even earns more money if you pirate it... piracy helps keeping the game existent and they can keep selling merchandize because said game is still revelant...
or you know. my cousin plays an old nes game in his phone throught an emulator, he likes it so much, that he now is interested in purchasing the new upcoming game of that series

but i am derailing the thread now...

I owned super Mario all stars on snes as a kid and lost the cart.

Years later I have downloaded that rom on countless consoles (Wii, Wii U, PS3, PSP for example) , various phones and tablets I have owned and rooted for emulators, and even on laptops and PCs to replay it.

Do I count each instance as a £40 game from the 90's?

well i guess because if you already owned a game and you stole it from the shop you would still get in trouble

Years on; the shop/company no longer sells that cart new, it's only available now second hand... Which the profit from a second hand sale doesn't go to the original games makers anyway .... So......

Any game sold second hand is similar in a way to piracy in that nintendo can only track unique sales from new. So second hand games are played without the original makers making money... One physical cart could be bought, traded, bought, traded infinitely making Nintendo just 1x£40 sale 30 years ago....

Edit:

As a counter argument: I could have paid for it on Wii/Wii U/DS/3DS eshops etc... But eh!

Actually no.
It's a valid argument in saying piracy for old games on legacy systems isn't completely wrong.
Tho it still remains piracy... it is a good way of introducing people to game franchises.

"I bought this new installment cause I liked the older ones that I pirated"
Sounds weird to say but eh, at least the developer and retailer get a share for the new game ;/
