Revision used USB Loader GX: 3.0 r1239.

Used all the ports (near the SD and one in the back of the Wii U). I had some success in loading the game from USB Port 1 (changing the loader setting) and when it was in the back in the top usb port. Though, the issue was that after getting the game to appear...frozen black screen.

Mostly followed the video and its entirely except I used Wii Backup Manager to transfer the wbfs to both flash drive: Sandisk 16GB and an HDD: My Book Essential 3 TB.

I am stuck in limbo with trying to get it to work. Any help, suggestions will surely help me get out of this confusing, suffering mess of trying to get a solution.

You mentioned using WBFS up there. Perhaps try using FAT32 or NTFS instead, as those formats are much more stable.
If Wii Backup Manager is a problem, USB Loader GX has a built in game dumper, just stick the Hard Drive in to your console (back top port) open USB Loader GX and insert your game disc. It will prompt you to dump the disc to the Hard Drive, and download the cover art for you.

(...so useful, yet so easy)

if using USBLoaderGX in vWii of your WiiU, your drive must first be formatted to FAT32, (you can use WiiBackupManager program to format your drive other than managing ISOs to wbfs it has that option as well to format drives or SD cards, very useful) then you must have an HDD with its own power source or use a Y cable where you can plug two ends to the back of the WiiU even if that particular hard drive works without an external power before..

First, update the loader. 1239 is not the latest release. Update to 1260.
second, use Y-cable if your drive doesn't have its own power source, as WiiU is not providing enough power through a single USB port.

USBPort0 IS the one at the top in the back of the console, so if "the top port" worked, that's because it's the recommended one.

NEVER follow a youtube hacking tutorial. They are ALWAYS bad and will at best makes you having issues and needed to go to GBAtemp to ask for help, at worse break your console.
OK, I'll watch the video now, just to confirm...

It was good until it provides "WBFS manager" instead of Wii Backup Manager, and force you to format to WBFS instead of FAT32.
but you said you used the right program so you should be fine, even if you are still using an outdated and deprecated partition format.

Second issue is the provided package contains outdated programs, which could be dangerous ! never follow an old tutorial !
it's also missing important steps where you have to dump your IOS files for brick recovery.

Also, it's not really explaining how to use SSB exploit, there are two different version, one with or without savegame. if you use the PAL (which he says "don't create a savegame") it will not work if you already played that game, and he never told you to make a backup of your current game progress.

missing steps and always forcing users to do it "their ways" instead of providing choices. like forcing users to install cIOS r53 instead of r52, which has issues with some games.

the vWii is a little tricky so yah should follow the guide here on gbatemp than youtube videos or read comments first before blindly following..

@Creeper Mario
I've use formatted FAT32 hard drive and never touched WBFS format, so don't think the problem lies there.
Is the built in game dumper, the one where you click on the "+" sign? Thank you for this, at least I'l be able to get some games working.

@owek1
May you link a recommended Y-cable from Amazon? And is there any HDD recommended for this? What is the recommended guide here on gbatemp? Very much a newbie when it comes to forums as this is one of the first times I've written a post (always been more like a lurker in the past).

@Cyan
Am I able to simply update the loader through the "update" option within the loader or would I need to get a new free install? For the SSB exploit, Ive followed the miimod guide for it and installed homebrew 1.12 (I think)? What cIOS should I download and where would I get my hands on them?

Since you're a very experienced moderator here, can you explain me the source of why this problem of "not initiating" exists?

Thank you all for the response and getting me some hope to this process.

don't worry about SSB exploit, I was just pointing to issue at his tutorial, because he doesn't explain everything.
But if you installed HBC, then it means you correctly done it.

Most tutorial tell users to install cIOS d2x v10-alt.
that's not very bad, but v10 (non alt) is sometime better for compatibility (emuNAND and some games have issue with the Alternative version).
Your base and slot are fine, just the not version.

also, v10 (non alt) is compatible only with USB Port 0 (not port1), the top-back port on Wiiu.

If you have a Western Digital USB3.0 drive, you could be one of the users with the "init drive" bug from USBLoaderGX.
I don't know how to fix it yet, but what you can do it set the loader's IOS to 58.

1. update the loader
Try from the internal menu, it will require you to do it twice (once it will update to 1256, located on googlecode)
second time, it will update to 1260, located on sourceforge (new project website, as googlecode closed last year).

If the internal update doesn't work (due to google being closed), you can find latest release in my signature.
extract to your SD card.

2. go to settings > Loader settings
set the option "Loader's IOS" to 58.
reboot.

3. you NEED the Y-cable for your drive.
like explained, the WiiU doesn't provide enough power from a single USB port, you need 2 USB Port to power your drive.

4.
What is the recommended guide here on gbatemp?

There are 3 guides.
two old one, very simple and still good to follow . located in the WiiU Tutorial section.
one recent, very complete with explanations, located in the stickied thread on this section.

i purchased it thru ebay, im not sure if you have a USB2.0 or 3.0 so just search USB2.0 or 3.0 Y Cable and choices will show up, the brand of cable is not important i think as i got mine shipped from hong kong somewhere and it isnt branded or anything, just came inside an envelope and bubble wrap. for HDD personally i used a Toshiba hard drive taken from the internal my old macbook as i upgraded to SSD thus got the spare hard drive then enclosed in a Kingston drive enclosure and that's with my WiiU, as for my Wii I used WD (Elements) 500GB, (some are even using like 1TB or more) seems to be the brand as well that most people use and recommend here..that's just my personal experience and so far both drives have been very reliable thinking i got the WD and that Toshiba for about 6 years now..

Updated Usb Loader GX to r1260 & changed the loader setting to IOS58. Still having the same error message as posted in the title of this thread. I'm assuming the last missing piece of the puzzle is to get the Y-Cable so the HDD can have enough power to be recognised, correct? (Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, just making sure I am following the advice).

Side note: Does it matter if the HDD originally has a password

The official guide from CJB100 seems to recommend "d2xv10-beta53-alt-vWii" like you said. The game I'm trying to get running up is Pandora's Tower & The Last Story.

Is there a compatibility list and settings for wii games in general somewhere I should check or have as a resource?

@owek1
Thanks for providing some of your own HDD and Y cables you used. I have a USB 3.0 and planning on buying it from Amazon: eForCity dual A to Micro-B USB 3.0 Y Cable, Black.

For the HDD, is there any lower, cheaper storage available? I think having a 500 GB for this seems to be too much unnecessary space.

[/QUOTE]

the Toshiba that i used on my WiiU vWii is only 256GB, perhaps that would be enough? so far i have only seen mostly 500GB and above on the internet but i could be looking at the wrong place. for me having a 500GB or 1TB might come in handy when a permanent hack or usb support on WiiU's side (waiting for usb support for Loadiine GX2) comes, at least your hard drive is future proof, you could place all your Wii, WiiU , retro roms, GC backups in one hard drive..

edit: did a bit of searching on EBay just now and found this..

but please bear in mind the drive compatibility, some other members might shed some light if these drives are reliable and works with WiiU..thanks.

I finally got my Y-Cable yet my hard drive mentioned above is still facing the same exact problem?

you need to make sure the y cable data cable is on the wiiu upper back port and the power one on wiiu back lower port.

The power cable is the one splitting off and the data cable connecting the power and the micro?
I've tried it both ways and...no luck.

I don't know what to do. I've tried everything suggested in both the guides and this discussion.

Well, maybe my situation might help you.

I had a 500GB 2.5" USB powered external hard drive. I had my old HDD formatted to NTFS with a folder "wbfs" on the root of the drive and the name of the game folder placed inside of the wbfs folder. This setup works with USB Loader without the error message.

Well, just last week I bought a 2TB 2.5" USB powered external hard drive. But forgetting what what I had formatted my previous 500GB hard drive to, I took a guess to format my new 2TB hard drive FAT32 using "swissknife" app. I then placed a folder "wbfs" on the root of the drive. This setup produced the error message that you mention.

My conclusion from my experience is to make sure it is formatted to NTFS, NOT FAT32. I am in the process right now of re-formatting my drive to NTFS. ^.^

I'm also having the same problem, I've followed cyan's instructions on how to fix the USB but now everytime I load up the iOS it takes me back to the homebrew channel. This is the guide I used

UPDATE: I was able to figure it out. I didn't plug my USB in the Wii U back top port :P

First, update the loader. 1239 is not the latest release. Update to 1260.
second, use Y-cable if your drive doesn't have its own power source, as WiiU is not providing enough power through a single USB port.

USBPort0 IS the one at the top in the back of the console, so if "the top port" worked, that's because it's the recommended one.

ok. i've been reading a bunch of things to do from you specifically all weekend and want to share my side of the problems: when i first softmodded my wii, everything worked perfectly. but every time i "updated" anything (in quotes because it seems like a downgrade), things started messing up. game freezes after 20 minutes playing, black screens before game starts, etc. seems like this trouble started when i update TDB from usb loader GX's internal option... anyway - i decided to update GX. it's Rev1262, i'm using d2x v10beta52 base58, IOS249 (rev 65535) + AHB, and the problem is not "not enough power from the wii" because like i said, everything worked, including the hard drive, before i started updating anything.

yes it's plugged into the proper usb port. like hell i'll format my hard drive because it's holding 215 games (350GBs). i'll rip all my skin off if i ever lose the games and effort put into getting those games (let alone the effort to get them back these days)! point is, there MUST be a simple and easy fix to this. again - everything worked 10 years ago until i updated anything - big mistake to update anything. i should've stuck with the first versions of everything. and also, every step i took to solve the problem never fixed anything. it either made no difference to anything, or made it worse. why was WBFS deemed no good? WBFS worked! now GX wont even read a perfectly good hard drive. what advice do you have now? ...although "get a wiiU and start all over" sounds like a nice option lol... but anything else to save my original funbox (my wii) UPDATE EDIT: i just went back to GX 3.0 and it reads the drive. Same games still freeze but at least i have it reading the usb drive. See? There is an easy copy/paste fix! No need for this complicated reprogramming crap.

I'm sure with time, advanced tech will eventually make it easier to play everything on a PC or other device just like all other past systems

It may not be the same particular issue as you, but I get this error intermittently. I just delete all the config files and that seems to make it happy again. Not sure why.
