Anyone know what the deal is with this? Is there some setting I haven't toggled? It works perfectly fine if I launch it from the homebrew or wii system menu.

When I try launching it via USB Loader GX however, it can never access the Hard Drive. Even if I add the filepath manually. I'm trying different forwarders right now to see if that's the issue but no such luck so far.

I think it's a bug I introduced recently. sorry I'm adding bugs instead of fixing them :P
That's strange as it works fine with nintendont. I'll have to see what I did wrong.

how are you launching the emulator ? for a forwarder channel installed on NAND or from the homebrew browser icon ?

what you can try is to add a forwarder channel, and display channel from NAND inside the loader. you can then launch it from the main interface. but that might not work either because the channel should be expected IOS58 to be loaded and USBLoaderGX will load IOS249 instead (another thing I need to fix).

Loading it via the Forwarder Channel on the Wii System menu or the Homebrew Browser Icon both work perfectly fine.

No problem if it's a bug :P It's an extremely minor inconvenience at worst, and every other aspect of USB Loader GX is about as top-tier as homebrew gets. I'll give the NAND forwarding a shot.

Now that I try it, Genesis Plus GX also cannot read the external drive if it's launched via USB Loader.

NeoCD works flawlessly however (and has cover art available somehow).

no, it is not a bug introduced by you. I have done a bit of research on these things a while a ago but my memory is fading and I am now in "gaming mode" ;):

1. The bug can be traced back to r1180 (didn't test further than that)
2. I have tried to manually edit individual "game setting" to ios58 and it worked. But then, a few weeks later, it wouldn't work - I don't know what I have done to the console/ulgx but I am sure I didn't touch anything hardware/softmod wise to the console. I don't think its stable but if you are good at manually editing, you may try.
3. Some apps may reload cios like SaveGameManager or setting Wiiexplorer to reload cios249 and they work. Yes, it is a bug from ULGX but it can also be "fixed" from the homebrew apps' side.
4. I have tried the internal home-brews browser of ulgx and it worked everytime. I have tried to read the codes but with my limited knowledge, can't figure out what it does but my guess is it unloads ulgx, reset the console and launch the home-brews as if they were launched from system menu.
5. So I guess the best way is to launch nand home-brews the internal home-brews browser's way but then I don't know if it is easy to separate home-brew forwarders and WW/VC.

Yep, found it. My original posts: https://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-loader-gx.149922/page-1099#post-6207523

ah, thank you.
You probably already told me all this, but as I didn't do anything quickly I forgot all the details.
I added it to my blog to remember it and have links to your reports.

on your other post, you said setting 249 in wiixplorer helped, probably because the homebrew forced a reload and remount.
I'll see, maybe I just need to not stop the drive before launching homebrew.
