Hacking Am I running my Slim 2500a to hot?

I was told that setting my fan (with the Webman dynamic fan control) to about 65'C should do fine as far as keeping my Slim 2500a cool enough. But curiosity got the best of me so I turned off the dynamic fan control to see what my idle and gaming temps were.

Idle my PS3 sits at 65 degrees Celsius on both CPU and RSX and after running Uncharted 3 for about 20 minutes it goes up to around 71 degrees Celsius, is that too hot? I was reading that prolonged exposure to 73'C or higher can cause YLOD issues after a while. It seems as though the fan stays on at about 30% regardless of whether I use the dynamic fan control or not so I guess there is no hard in setting it to come on at about 60 or 65'C, right? It seems to stay cool at the temp I set it at, even when playing games like Uncharted 3 (right now its at 60'C on Uncharted with the fan running at 45% to 55%). Will doing so cause premature deterioration of the fan?

There is so much conflicting information out there I just want to make sure I have this right so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what is the best fan utility to use? Is the dynamic fan control in Webman good enough or is there something better?

seeing as the cfw voids any warranty, i suggest replacing the thermal paste with arctic silver 5 or shin-etsu paste. the stock paste sony uses contributes to high temps and ylod. and you may want to keep the fan at the recomended settings until you can do a thermal paste replacement.

I think never going above 65c is a good approach. I have my Falcon JTAG Xbox 360 SMC set this way and it is still going strong.
once you sey 60c or especially 55c, the fan speed will go up quite a bit to fight the heat.

this also applies to PS3 of course. I have no idea how loud your fan is but hardware wise, I think 65c is a good compromise between heat, console longevity, and fan noise.
Webman works fine for fan control. it reminds me a lot of the fan control in Freestyle dash for 360 in how it works.

for 360, I set my temp settings in the SMC config but I have not found anything like that for PS3. If someone else reading this knows of how to do this, I would like to know.

i think reburg cfw has the fan options in the rebug tool box as well as webman.

My PS3 used to freeze and overheat before. When I downgraded, I replaced the thermal paste on both chips and the fan with arctic silver 5. I don't have anymore troubles anymore. I would recommend changing the thermal paste first before changing any settings.

Man, I would love to change the thermal paste and I am fairly tech savvy but... it just seems intimidating. I bought it new last year and it has been played less than 40 hours overall, I would hate to mess it up and I don't know if I trust anyone else to do it, heh.

Does anyone know of a good/reputable repair shop in the U.S. to send it to?

When you say " if you can run 65c or below on stock paste, you will be fine" do you mean 65'C with the fan settings changed in Webman or without Webman?

And when (and if) I change the thermal paste, I need to change it on both processors right?

That's in correct
It should be set at 68deg for fat consoles 72deg for slim consoles

Another thing to check is that the CPU temp is no more than 5deg hotter than the gpu
If it is then the paste under both ihs's need changing

This is incorrect
The system will ylod if the gpu hits 83deg you will get the "system is to hot" message at 79deg - 80deg

that's too cold
The fan not only cools the CPU & gpu but it also passively cools other items like
the memory chips
Wifi & blutooth module
Various voltage regulators
Syscon chip
Power supply
DVD drive
If you cool too much then some of these will slow down as they need to be warm to function properly

Yes but it won't happen quickly. It will happen so slow over such a great length of time that the console would be long gone before the damage became noticeable

Lol, for this to even start to happen, you would need to be cooling the ps3 with air from Antarctica, like -50c.

All the components in the PS3 will become more efficient the cooler the console gets (to a point that is), although not by a huge amount.

I don't know why your slim is running too hot. I have a Slim CECH-2001A 120GB and a REBUG 4.80.1. I have been used it for about 6 years now. Never have a problem.

Wow, thanks a lot for your answer(s). So I guess maybe I am just worrying too much for no reason? I will watch the temperature's for the two processors closely as time goes on and like you said, if they get higher or over 5'C between the two then I will think about changing the paste and the fans seem easy enough to replace if it ever goes bad. I guess if there isn't a problem then don't try to fix it, right? =P

It's not that it was running hot it was just that I didn't know what "hot" was so I was trying to find out. I think it's running correctly, my concern was that over time thermal paste dries and even though the unit is new out of the box... it is still 5/6 years old (I think it was a nov 2010 2500a model). I just wanted to make sure I am doing everything to properly take care of it, to prevent future problems since I am more of a collector/hobbyist gamer these days than a hardcore gamer. Just want to keep it in mint condition, heh.

Oh, heh. I think you will be fine. Its better than PS3 PHAT. PS3 phat can lead to YLOD easily. Correct me if I am wrong. I never had a PS3 Phat before. Just heard about it.

Yeah, I was seeing videos of people doing all these crazy modifications on their PS3 Slims, like drilling holes in the hull, etc. So it got me paranoid that I might be doing something wrong but I guess those videos were for people who have older/worn systems with severe heating problems. Basically a last ditch effort to save having to buy a new PS3.

Dont trust these crazy modifications on their PS3 Slims. Youtube people can be weird and crazy. Don't trust them. You will be fine.
