Homebrew Is there a way to identify the system version just looking to the box?

Hey Guys.

My brother is gonna buy a new 3DS and I would like to know if is possible to know the system version just looking to its box. I know that's gonna be below 11.0. But I'm wondering if is possible to know exactly the right version.

You may be able to tell by the serial number. I know the Wii U has a serial number database that you can refer to for this kind of information; perhaps the 3ds does as well.

EDIT: After doing a few minutes' worth of googling, it appears there is no such database.

EDIT 2: Disregard the previous edit. There seems to be such a database, and a user linked to it only a few posts down.

Only a few newest lot of New 3DS have 11.0 like the Monster Hunter Generations bundle, most New 3DS consoles have 9.x and 10.x if you buy them new, you can go to a place that have the consoles some months and aren"t much of restocking all the time or one that let you test the console you are going to buy before you buy it and then see the Version in System Settings.

what he said , also if you buy a Non-bundled one and find that it was updated (to 11.x) by the store staff or something , you can just have it replaced and tell them it's Pre-owned , (a friend once did that when he bought a n3ds xl and found out it was updated to "10.7" by the workers ).

Yes the Serial Number is also one of the sides of the box.

Theres is no way of linking anything after the first owner for obvious reasons. Then again I have a pair of buy smart techniques:
1) If have good memory, check the serial number. Its also in a sticker on the system's backplate. This does not guard you from any updates done to the system.
2) Power it on. You have to do a quick check before buying, but initial setup is Too long to check version? Just look at the default system date year when it asks to set the time. 2014 and below are jackpot. 2015 has risks, better check more deeply.
3) Directly in the preferences duh. If the seller allows you, always check it yourself.
