So I saw two videos on yt of how to install hb channel and backup and run legit'ly bought disk from hard drive. So I have a few questions-
1. Whats the minimum size of sd size? Like, I have a 64mb (no gb) card and I cant find anything closer to 2gb... so is that enough?(tried, but it doesnt format to fat32 only fat)
2. if its impossible, can I use microsd with adapters?
3. That video shows only the legit side... if I will follow that vid, What do I need to do to install wads from the net? And disk roms?

Sorry Im noob in that scene, I only hacked my 3ds and it was fun... so I may not understand what ya say...
Edit- its a white original wii, not wiiu... I may be noob, but not that much...

1-use a 2gb
2-yes as long as it is formatted to fat32
3-install homebrew channel
Then use pimp my Wii to install custom iOS/hack the Wii and then use USB loader gx for piracy or YAWMM to install wads
Whats pimp my wii?
Can ya link me to yawmm thread or smthng? Also:ph34r::ninja:

1. The minimum size of an SD Card is 3MB (Last time I checked.) You can check here for some compatible SD Cards, ranging from a few MB, to 16GB SD Cards. http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/SD/SDHC_Card_Compatibility_Tests (Note Twilight Hack is a game exploit to install Homebrew. If you are really worried that the Letter bomb Exploit will not work. Get a SD Card compatible with the Twilight Hack, and Homebrew Channel.)
2. Yes you can. I preferably use a Transcend Micro SD Card, with Micro SD Adapter. It works very well, and I have no issues. Its a 4 GB Card, and SDHC Card.
3. Which YouTube tutorial are you following?

Edit: Also a note; PimpmyWii is infamous for causing Wii Bricks. I would preferably not use that unless your very disparate to install something on your Wii, or uninstall. It should only be used for emergency purposes if all other alternatives of fixing your Wii, or recovering from something is impossible,

Yes it is a good tutorial.
It should be fine to use an SDHC Card but it may not install perfectly on your Wii. So use it at your own risk, I did it with mine, and it worked fine, but success will vary even if you use the same SD Card I have. You may, or may be able to boot into the exploit, or freeze at a certain point of installing it with SDHC.

SD Card 2GB Minimum will work fine with the tutorial.

The reason I had also recommended Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess was because it tests to note that the exploit works. If the exploit works than its likely Homebrew will install on your Wii with Letterbomb, or any other game exploit. But again it varies based on success you could buy an SD Card, and have Letterbomb work, but not have the exploit boot (Hackmii Screen.) Same thing with Twilight Princess.

I would never recommend Youtube nor PimpMyWii to hack the console :(
Youtube is full of bad tutorial, made by users who don't know what they are explaining.
PimpMyWii has some dangerous menus and options that users shouldn't use.

The youtube tutorial looked nice, at start, but again, it failed to properly let you softmod your console. He skipped the bootmii installation !
so, you can follow it, but instead of exiting the installer after installing HBC, go to bootmii menu and install bootmii as IOS (and if you can, as Boot2 too). you can also "prepare the SD card" in that menu, which will create some files on your SD card. these files are needed to use bootmii. If you can install bootmii as boot2, it will automatically boot into bootmii when you power on your console. Don't worry, it can be bypassed by editing a setting.

You can use any size SD card, or microSD card.
SDHC should even work, you can try.
FAT (16) can work too, you don't need FAT32.
Just try and see if it works.

You should follow a full guide instead of trying to follow random, incomplete, and conflicting guides on youtube.
Modmii is a good start, as it asks you questions and generate a full guide based on your own answers. It generate a softmod guide which allows you to run backup.
I don't know which guide you found on youtube, nor how outdated it is, but do not follow OLD videos without checking first if what they tell you to do is STILL good to follow.

You did well to ask here first before doing anything :)
Don't hesitate to ask again. (and please, don't use pimpmywii, nor recommend it. I often had to help users fix their console due to that program. I don't know why this program is getting more interest this month. 2 new users are recommending it in many threads...)

because people use it wrongly. The tool itself is fine (as much as I know), but what's possible with it is dangerous.

Users are patching ALL their IOS, it's a batch tool to patch all clean IOS to add signature check patches and some other patches, which are NOT required anymore for a long time.
A lot of homebrew are using Clean IOS, not patched ones.
Some users used it on vWii too, which patched the vWii IOS and broke the WiiU. having a tool with an easy menu where people can just press a button and do things they don't understand is not a good tool, at least not for newbies. Even if the main purpose was to help newbies, they shouldn't use it without understanding the impact of what they are doing.
Very rare users really need or want to play games from patched+burned discs, every body use USB loaders. patching the IOS was needed only 6-7 years ago, when burning disc was the way to hack and play backup games. then USB was released, and CIOSCorp/DarkCorps became useless, if not even bad practices. as a result, HBC is upside down, some homebrew doesn't work (Riivolution, Nintendont). really, users should only do minimal patching, no need to install 40 files when only 1 is needed

If a user want to softmod his console, he does NOT need pimpMyWii, he does NOT need to patch all his IOS.
I also think it's very bad practice to patch existing official IOS in their own slots, it's better to patch and install the result in ANOTHER slot (like IOS36, its patched version is installed in slot 236, keeping the IOS36 clean for other tools to use). More and more homebrew started patching the IOS on the fly in memory, and require a clean IOS data. adding and patching what they need only if/when needed.

If he want to softmod his console for backup loading, he only need to patch and install ONE cIOS : a d2x base57 (99% game compatibility).
I only recommend users who want to softmod their console to install HBC, then use d2x installer and choose to install a single IOS. it's easy and clean. no need to use tools to do things in batch in the background for you.

Even Modmii generated softmod guide is not the best as it install lot of unuseful files (only one is needed), but at least it doesn't replace exiting and official ones.

PimpMyWii has a VERY bad reputation, known for bricking consoles. I never encountered bricked users on Wii (but vWii I did), so I can't tell about the brick issue. But I can tell that It's infamous and nobody like it here.

You said whats WRONG. can you give me a GOOD tutorial??
I started doing the modmii guide and then you said its bad...
Anyways.. I now have hbc and bootmii as ios. And I already backed up my nand and now what? I think I need to patch that ios (whos number I cant remember) via tool from hbc, right? But where to get a GOOD tool for patching it? And the modmii guide says that I should see the patcher on hbc, but my hbc is empty...
What to do now? What guide should I follow next?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also is patching the wii for using burned discs hard or risky?I want to get some burned discs in some shelf and know that they will always work... but only if its safe and easy to do

Sorry if it's troubling you.
modmii is fine, as it doesn't modify the existing files, it only adds new ones. It just adds unnecessary files, but you don't have to worry about that, as it will also install the things you need.

Here is the tool you need if you don't want to use modmii:
(you don't need modmii anymore if you already installed HBC and made a dump of your NAND)

D2x cIOS installer - Full package for Wii

Extract it to your SD card, in a way that you have the "boot.dol" in a "d2x installer" folder.
For example :
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/boot.dol
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/icon.png
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/meta.xml
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/ciosmaps.xml
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/7/
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/8/
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/10/

put on Wii, launch the installer.
note that you'll need the network enabled, as you'll download files from Nintendo's servers.

In the installer, choose this :
What : d2x v8 Final
Where : 249
Base : 57
Version : 21008
Press A to install, and wait until it's done.
Exit with Home button, that's all :)

You'll wonder why v8 instead of v10 ?
v8 is latest stable release.
v10 is a copy of v8 but with a little fix for HDD detection. if v8 works, you don't need v10.
v10 (r52) = V8
v10-alt (r53) = v8 + USBPort1 support, but EmuNAND support is broken.

If you don't need to connect 2 HDD at the same time, you'd better install v8, you don't need v10-alt.

About the "base" :
Lot of guides make the users install different cIOS with different bases, just as common practice.
a custom IOS is based on an official IOS, it adds patches, and install the result in a new slot.

cIOS based on IOS56 works fine with all games needed IOS56 or lower, but games which usually require the official IOS57 will not work with the base56 (as it miss some functions).
It's best to just install a cIOS with the base 57 (working with all games), instead of installing both cIOS[56] and cIOS[57] and switch to 57 when a game is not working....

But it's up to you.
If you want to have the same setup than lot of users, you can do this :

What : d2x v8 Final
Where : 249
Base : 56
Version : 21008

What : d2x v8 Final
Where : 250
Base : 57
Version : 21008

by default, USBLoader will use the slot249 (which contains the base56), some games will not work and you'll have to set the slot to 250 for these games in the loader's settings.

You asked about burned disc :
Just know that NOT all consoles are compatible with DVD-R.
you must be sure Burned discs are working first.
the old method to use burned disc was to patch all IOS (like I explained above, using pimpmywii or DarkCorps tools). but it's now working fine from USBLoaders without patching ANY of the IOS files.
insert the burned game disc while inside the USBloader and see if it works.

Homebrew already installs on an IOS, and Bootmii as well. Which means there is no need for patching an IOS on your Wii, or using ModMii. ModMii serves as providing a way to resolve issues, or errors on your Wii. ModMii is normally only used in drastic cases Wii's are serverley damaged, or broken. (Electronically, not physically.)

Yes it's also safe to install a USB Loader so you can store games on your hard drive, or emulate games on your Wii System. But I would hold off on getting it until you learn the basics completely. It's going to be hard to install something on your Wii without knowing some of the basics of Wii Hardware. For example not knowing what a IOS is on a Wii, or not knowing how to troubleshoot, or recover from a brick.

Also in addition to Homebrew, and Bootmii, have you installed Priiloader? Just out of curiosity becuase it can really help you recover from a brick.

ah yes, I didn't tell you about priiloader (that's not something I use, so I often forget about it).
I explained a little what "IOS" are in my post above. If he wants a more detailed information I can provide it.

About priiloader :
when you boot the console, it launches the system menu.
if you install priiloader, it will boot priiloader first then the system menu.
it's useful in two different cases :
1- in case of issues with the system menu, you can tell priiloader to launch the homebrew channel instead, and from here you can fix your issue.
2- priiloader can patch the system menu at launch time to add or remove features, for example : add region free support, remove system update message, remove the savegame anti-copy protection, etc.

There's a moded and newer priiloader installer instead of the official one.
I can find it if you want.

Im sorry for asking stupid questions, but whats the installer? I mean how to run it?

I explained that in my message.
An "installer" is ... a program used to install something.
To run it ... you follow what I wrote?
You know how to download a file ? You know how to extract a 7zip file ? you know how to create a folder on your SD card ? you know how to move or copy files to SD card?
so, extract the file you'll get from the link I gave you to your SD card.
It should "look" like what I wrote :

sd:/apps/d2x_installer/boot.dol
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/icon.png
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/meta.xml
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/ciosmaps.xml
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/7/
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/8/
sd:/apps/d2x_installer/10/

Also I have hbc and bootmii(couldnt install as boot2, dont really care about it...) so I dont need d2x cios installer right?
Also how to install the loader? Where to get him?
If you want to play backups, YES, you need to install d2x cIOS.
this is what allows you to play backups and use USBLoaderGX or another USB Loader.

The loader will be NEXT step. first you need to install d2x if you want to use a loader.

Please, follow what I told you, don't try things or don't think "you don't need things" by yourself. That's the worst way to do when someone help you and best way mess your console.
if you are not sure, ask again, but don't do things without being sure or without being asked to.

if you followed modmii tutorial, and you don't see anything in HBC, then you did something wrong already. you don't know how to copy files to SD card or you forgot some of them.

Yes, I used the letterbomb exploit... whats the diffrence?
You mentioned the loader... again,, how to install it? Can it load GC games, with that feature of using the sd instead of memory card?
I dont care about installing emulators and such... only wanna play some wii disc roms and some hacked channels(wads?) Like pokemon ranch (for "legit" mew..)

I think you are trying to do things you don't understand.
If you don't know what a loader is (it's a program used to LOAD the games), maybe you should let someone else do it for you.
There's no install needed, but just DON'T TRY TO GO FASTER THAN WHAT WE TELL YOU TO DO. please.
one step at a time.

we are not there yet.
Maybe a reminder : You won't play games from disc ! Your wii is probably not compatible with burned discs if you couldn't install bootmii as boot2. (it means your console is not old enough and nintendo fixed the disc reading to prevent users from using burned discs)
you'll play them from SD or USB.
It will require a lot of manipulation to get the game on these devices and make them working with a "loader" (program to load the game!).
if you don't feel like you have the knowledge to do it, ask someone else to help you.

Sorry for going too fast... I dont do anything untill i'll understand the next step...
The thing is ... you write something short, I read it and understand something and then you edit it and add more info... please just do the replies slower and more complete, itll help me...
Im not a pc noob, im just new in wii scene... I understand 80% of the a9lh process and whats happening behind the scenes on 3ds in the pricess, and it looks somewhat like it... but even simpler... just please reply when you wrote everything...
So I gave up on discs... too much effort... and I understand that I'll be using usb hard drive...
And while using modmii it tried to download 32 files, and one of them it was unable to... I dont remember exactly which file, so please tell me what files to move to sd manually...

And if I ubderstand, the next step is installing the d2x, right? Just say yes and it will be done...

Modmii had issue with a download ?
You didn't follow the guide at all, right? if you tried to follow a guide with missing files you could have broke your console :(
Always be sure everything works and complete successfully before you attempt the next step. Do not attempt a hack with missing files, that's dangerous...

Sorry if I'm editing my posts, I mentioned I was still writing it. I wanted to post quickly the first part of the guide before someone else told you to do something else.
I also edited my message to add a lot of explanation to help you understand why you are doing something, instead of following guides blindly, but maybe you prefer following very noob guides without understanding, just following VERY detailed steps by steps one by one? like "Press A" then "press Right one time" then "Press A" ?

2. I do want to understand what I do more then following guides blindly, but in some post you wrote that modmii is a good tool then moment later you wrote its not the best so I got confused after reading this and other edits... I asked stupid questions out of confusion. I dont say youre a bad person, I really do appriciate your help, just wanted o point out my problems understanding what ya said...
3. You mentioned that modmii makes lotta useless files in the sd... should I clean them now? What files to delete, and what not?
