Hacking Questions on flashing Disc Drives (360 Phat, Jasper mobo)

I just have a few questions on this subject.
1. can I use my 360 to power the drive, and simply attach the SATA data cable into my laptop? (NO DESKTOPS HERE)

2. what is a list of things I would need to flash my drive, (it's a phat, Jasper mobo 360, so it's probably a liteon drive)

2a. I've seen some people say that a "probe" is needed for the liteon drive. what is this, and can I make it myself?

sorry if this has been asked 1,000,000 times before, I'm new to this, and recently got a new 360 because my old 360 (was jasper as well) won't behave when reading any kind of discs. it'll spin for a sec, stop, spin for a sec, stop, etc.
if I'm posting in the wrong place, I'd appreciate it i any of you wonderful mods would close this thread and link to a correct thread. thank you in advance!

Your SATA chipset needs to be compatible, and I'm afraid you'll need a X360 USB anyway (most laptops aren't supported)
2. X360 USB, Jungleflasher (software) and a probe 3 or PMT (self made probe)

Download Jungleflasher.
It comes with a detailed manual on how to flash everything.

Thanks for the fast reply! my laptop is a HP 15-d089wm with an Intel Core i3-3110M and 6 GB of RAM. afraid I don't know my chipset or anything like that. do you know how to find my chipset? My laptop has a disc drive (or was that obvious) but I could easily visit my cousin, as he has plenty of desktops, or all in one PC's. he uses Linux Mint exclusively though, does that matter? sorry for asking this again, but what exactly IS a "Probe 3" or "PMT" supposed to be?

You can match them up with this link

The probe 3/PMT is used for dumping the FW of the drive.
You can use the old MRA hack, it requires soldering and trace cutting.

You can run Jungleflasher in Wine I believe.

"speccy"? hardly. it's only got a intel HD graphics 4000 in it. and a 120 GB SSD. either way, you said a moment ago that "most laptops aren't supported" meaning some laptops ARE supported then? can you give me a link to any Laptops that DO work? I may have a Liteon 83850C v1 in my 360, and Jungleflasher's guide says I /shouldn't/ need a probe for that. I'm not sure as to what drive I DO have (other than it being a liteon) because I conveniently have no shell on the drive. See, I have 2 Jasper mobos, both Phats, only real difference is one is black, and one is white. and the black jasper has a silver disc tray.

EDIT: if I was to do this with a desktop, what all would I need? thanks!

Yes, the small piece of software used to check what hardware you have in your laptop.

All 360 DVD drives have been reflashed to 02510c so FW revision shouldn't really matter.
If you cannot retrieve your DVD key, you'll have to use a probe 3.
Info on what drive you have is located on the sticker of the drive.
Initial FW version is also on there.

Desktop, a compatible SATA chipset or a X360 USB Pro v1 + Probe 3.

one last question then. (I think.) what's the difference between a laptop's chipset and a desktop's chipset? my understanding is that I just need a controller that's compatible with the 360 disc drive and jungleflasher.... or am I completely off base with this?

Every SATA chipset is different.
Some work, majority doesn't.
If it doesn't work then you'll need to get yourself a X360 USB Pro.

so basically, to find out if it works or not, I should just plug it in and see? or would that damage anything? the disc drive in my laptop is dead, so that's not really an issue for me. or at least, I'm pretty sure it's dead. hasn't worked since I upgraded to Windows Craptastic- uh, I mean, Windows 10.

That's one way to test it.
But, just install speccy and check what kind of SATA chipset your laptop has.
It saves a lot of effort.

thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it! is there a list of compatible Laptop chipsets anywhere? the chipsets you linked to earlier were all desktop chipsets. again, thanks for having the patience to deal with a n00b like me!

The same SATA chipsets can be found in laptops. (Laptops and desktops share similar technology)

Good luck with it.
If you don't have one that's in the list then 9/10 times you'll have to get a X360 USB pro (those are guaranteed to work)
