Hardware Would HDMI out from WiiU work with DVI-D in on monitor?

I'm currently trying to get my console to work with my monitor. Since my ancient monitor (Dell SE198WFP) only has a DVI-D input available I ordered this DVI-D to HDMI adaptor.
I connected the DVI-D adaptor and then connected the HDMI into the adaptor. Turned on the monitor, set the input to 3: Digital, and turned on the Wii U. The monitor will appear to flash, and then it pops up some sort of self check box with red green blue and white. Attempting to change the resolution in Video Settings in the Wii U makes the monitor flash again, and it displays the box again.

So is it even possible to display the WiiU through DVI-D? Is it because this monitor is ancient? Anything I can do?

No offense. seriously.. maybe you have bought a bunk $1.73 DVI-D to HDMI adapter?

That kind of conversion should be fine. Check the converter with another device to make sure the cables and converter work correctly

Lol yeah, I ordered it one day without thinking. It's probably the actual adapter, but I wanted to ask in case there was something I was missing.

Look at that review on amazon, maybe you just bought the wrong adapter. Its possible that it cant do HDMI to DVI only DVI to HDMI. I have a similar adapter for one of my PC video cards.

Well the adapter definitely does HDMI to DVI, since there's no way it could do the reverse; it's DVI male and HDMI female, it'd have to be DVI female to HDMI male.

I read the top reviews, and the only two things that could interfere (the amount of pins and HDCP) aren't an issue. From my understanding, the WiiU doesn't even have HDCP (except in Netflix) and even if it did, the monitor I listed is advertised as HDCP compliant. And the amount of pins in the DVI female on the back of the monitor matches perfectly with the amount of pins on the DVI male adapter.

• Wii U only supports "limited range" RGB. Monitors that have a DVI port but not HDMI usually only support "full range" RGB, so the image may appear washed out.

I read about the RGB range, so we'll have to see if I get it to work. About the HDCP, that shouldn't be an issue, since this monitor is supposedly HDCP compliant. The only other issue I could think of is if the adapter isn't, which I don't even know if that would be possible.

HDMI to single-link DVI is an entirely passive conversion, so that shouldn't be an issue.

...one thing that *could* trip up some monitors is the presence of HDMI audio. The Wii U has an option to use analog audio using a Wii AV cable instead of HDMI audio; try setting that.

Ah yes good idea, I'll try that tomorrow. One thing I will note again, however, is that when I tried to change the resolution setting on the WiiU it said "Could not change setting."

No idea why, though. I'll see if it does that again.

DVI-D does not have the pins to pass audio through so it should never go anywhere

@Robins DVI cables are male on both ends, so an HDMI to DVI adapter will work as a DVI to HDMI cable. this adapter is passive (as @GerbilSoft mentioned earlier) so it should not matter what direction it is used.

Well I tried everything you guys suggested, but the monitor never displayed the image. I guess the adapter doesn't work.

There's no separate "pins" for audio. It's interleaved in part of the TMDS video stream. If you compare the pinout of single-link DVI-D to HDMI, you'll find that it's exactly the same.

There *are* some DVI-D receivers (and transmitters) that support HDMI audio as well, but they aren't that common.

yea, my mistake. this would also explain how some GPUs have DVI ports that can transmit audio with a DVI to HDMI adapter.
