Is it possible to play backups from a DVD-R on vWii mode instead of from SD/USB? It's much cheaper for me to go out and buy DVD-R's as the biggest USB I have is 8gb. And don't tell me to go buy bigger ones >.<

if your backup loader can read files from an external DVD, then you could copy the ISOS on DVD (as files, not burning the image)

I thought DVD support died with old vWii and Wii firmwares. Yeah you can do something like this.

You thought it died because I'm pretty certain it did. Someone should fact check me on this, but I'm pretty certain the laser eyes in Wii U's and later Wii's do not have DVD support. Wii games are based on DVD technology but they aren't exactly like them -- same as how Wii U games are based off Blu-Rays but are still a proprietary format.

Having the Wii U reads plan DVDs and Blu-rays would require installing a (currently non-existent) drivechip in the console.

Okay, I won't tell you to buy a bigger USB.

Go buy a bigger SD Card.

Not really, they only started verifying discs in-hardware with the last generation of optical drives (D3-2 and D4). On a real Wii you can indeed replace the drive with a compatible one, if you're interested!

Thanks everyone ^-^ Seems like I can't... oh well. Found a couple of super cheap 64gb USBs on Amazon so I'll be grabbing them!

I'd do some research before you buy them. Those cards may be poor quality, or they may be slow (which if you don't care about r/w speed, then go ahead ;)).

Read my stickied guide, I would think hard before settling with thumbdrives. They are known to give people issues. Get an actual USB Hard Drive.

Honestly every USB I've ever tried (I'd say 20+) worked on the vWii. Even the crappy ones.

As an IT professional I know your advice is sound. Just reporting my findings.

Same. I've never had issues with any of my thumb drives, but several friends I know irl have not been able to get their thumb drives work and nor have I. Plus it seems like a common problem on here for some reason, too. Probably something to do with the power specifications of the USB Ports on the Wii U.

I went to this page (https://gbatemp.net/threads/vwii-tri-core-linux.351024/page-8#post-4721454) and I think I heard someone said external DVD works on trinux 3 core linux for Wii U on vWii mode. But I have a question, is it possible to ripped original (External USB LG GDR-8082N DVD) and backup (DVD-R/+R DL) GameCube and Wii games from external DVD to SD or/and USB HDD by using Trinux, a 3 core linux, instead of run through the Wii U drive which it cannot read Wii backup, and original and backup GameCube disc?

it's not the "laser eyes" it is the DVD drives logic board in later wii's you are thinking of , it is called a non d2e drive ,i think the non d2e drives are the ones that can read burned discs ,if you do not have a non d2e drive you can not read burned discs with a wii ,games or dvd movies, you can however swap out the drives logic board in a d2e drive for one that is non d2e and make it read burned discs though , it's not the laser it's something in the dvd drives firmware chip that prevents burned dvd discs from reading not just games either movies or anything on a burned disc will not read, also i think it only reads dvd-r not dvd+r burned discs
as for the wii u's drive i have no idea what it uses or if it can read burned media
but for wii any drive with a chipset d2e or later will not read burned discs
