Hey dudes.

I am trying to get Homebrew working properly on my emuNAND and absolutely nothing is working correctly.

I'm using CTRBootManager and rxTools. My emuNAND is currently at 11.0 or whatever the EXACT latest version of the 3DS is.

I'm following the guide HERE in general, but the information it has there is essentially the same in most other places. I will copy-and-paste what it has to say about the thing I'm trying to do just for good measure:

In this step we will be installing HB Launcher. Or rather, we'll be installing an app on our homescreen that boots HB Launcher for us.

1) Download this: https://github.com/yellows8/hblauncher_loader/releases
2) Create a CIA folder on your SD card if it is not already there, and place "hb_launcher loader.cia" inside.
3) Turn on the 3DS and go into emuNAND
4) Open FBI or BigBlueMenu
5) Go to the CIA folder and install the "hb_launcehr loader.cia"
6) Once it has finished, press home and then X to close fbi/BigBlueMenu
7) You will get a gift, it will be the Homebrew Launcher Loader
8) Open the Homebrew Launcher Loader and hold Y
9) If you've followed this guide, it will load into CTRBootManager, to fix this, turn off the 3DS and put the SD card into your PC
10) You will now see a file names "hblauncherloader_otherapp_payload_OLD-10-3-0-28-EUR" or something similar
11) Open this file in Notepad or Notepad++
12) It will look like an encrypted mess, that's fine, it is supposed to
13) CTRL + F and find "boot" (without quotations)
14) Now replace the word "boot.3dsx" with "brew.3dsx" or "boot_hb.3dsx" depending on the guide (if you used this guide to set everything up, use brew.3dsx)
15) Save and close
16) That's it, now when you launch the HB Launcher Loader, it should just boot into the HB Launcher.

Simple enough, right? Well, apparently fucking not, because everything that is supposed to be happening is not.

First of all, I have tried pressing and holding Y a good 10 times now and the file simply will not appear in the root of my SD card. It even says on the Homebrew booting screen "Downloading payload to SD card as HTTP" or something along those lines, but I guess it's a fucking liar because it's nowhere to be found 80% of the times I've tried this.

And THEN, on the VERY few times I was able to actually get the payload on my SD card like it was supposed to (I have been re-downloading Homebrew and deleting .bin files for the past 2 hours now), I change the file in Notepad like I'm supposed to, load up Homebrew, and I get "An error has occurred. The system will now restart."

What the FUCK is going on? I am 100% sure it should not be this difficult. Am I shit out of luck because of my emuNAND's system version or something? In which case, fuck whichever guy said it was safe to update my emuNAND.

I'd appreciate some help on this.

probably because you're on Rxtools?

Just change the files over to Luma, it may boot then.

Well... first, your first mistake has been to use this guide. It's really outdated. You should have followed this one instead.
And now, you don't need to hold Y to save the payload. Actually, holding Y does the opposite with the new HBLL version :P

I used this guide back in the DAY. I'm an OG user, for lack of better phrasing. There was nothing else except for this.

I don't get why that would be the problem, considering MANY other people have used this guide with no issues.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying I don't understand why I am having issues when I haven't been able to find anyone else having the problems I'm having.

Also, I have a ton of games on this emuNAND and I'm concerned about losing them if I were to drastically change anything on my SD card.

Assuming if your payload isn't the issue, and you can boot into Homebrew launcher fine, just not into RXtools,

it's probably because it uses an older firmware's bin file or something, so the 11.0 FW on emunand may have broken some services,
which is the reason why it throws you "an error has occured" black screen.

So if you have the space to setup Luma, and try entering Luma from through HBL (may take a few tries), and if it works, it confirms that rxtools may be the problem.

before rxtools was dropped, the newer revisions gave me a big problem trying to update, hanging screen and initialization and whatever not.
It was at that point I jumped to using reinand.

Also, your sysnand must be connected to network, and have wireless on, in order to download payload for menuhax (in case if you're reinstalling it)

Well...as far as I'm aware, I can use rxTools just fine. I don't ever recall having a problem with it since I first installed it in early January. The problems I'm having with Homebrew are the only problems I've ever had with it. When I make the changes I was told to make, Homebrew does not boot at all.

Each time I was able to successfully make a .bin file of HBL's payload, it has listed the current version of my 3DS's emuNAND with no problem. So I don't understand what you mean by that.

My internet is definitely on and connected in both my sysNAND and my emuNAND.

If I were to set up Luma on my SD card, would I still be able to get to all my games without them having to lose their save files? I'm confused.

Changing a cfw shouldn't destroy your saves, since your saves are in your sd card, and their secure values are stored in your (emu)nand.

Btw I'm just curious, what sysnand version are you on, and do you menuhax -> coldboot into your rxtools or do you use another launcher.

Basically, what's your full setup.

sysNAND 9.2.0-20U, downgraded from 10.3

I'm not sure what "coldboot" means since I'm generally not knowledgeable about the jargon associated with this community or programming in general. But I used menuhax, so I think it's safe to assume I coldboot into rxTools. I also know I use CTRBootManager.

Basically, I used menuhax to install my CFW. After I set everything up, I just hold down L to activate CTRBootManager and load into rxTools that way. I know you can set it up to where it goes into emuNAND automatically, but I'm too apathetic to do anything about it.

Hopefully that answered your question.

"Coldboot" typically refers to booting straight into a CFW without any keypress; think of it as automatic booting, by simple turning on your 3DS.
previous methods required one to go to system settings and press profile in order to enter CFW (ds profile hax or aka msethax)

BTW,
you won't necessary have to use homebrewlauncher as a .cia to boot into HBL, you could get it to enter via CTRbootmanager.
(like using a notepad plus editor type of tool on the boot.cfg, if I'm not mistaken)
Also, I think homebrewlauncher.cia requires the original boot.3dsx for HBL, to boot into HBL,
which you probably already had replaced with CTRbootmanager's boot.3dsx

what I mentioned above is my personal experience when I was still using menuhax, so it may not be entirely right.

So, I figured out what I was doing wrong this entire time:

1) like @TheKawaiiDesu said, I shouldn't press Y. That was the place where the guide was very outdated.

2) I was using Notepad, and while that can be okay, it can also corrupt a bit of the file after saving it. I used Notepad++ and everything worked fine after that.

I just now got it to work as it should and I'm FINALLY able to do the things I want to do with it. Thank fucking god.

But yeah, I'm still gonna look into Luma because it overall looks much more user-friendly and faster than what I have now. Thanks @Queno138 for all your advice/explanations/patience.
