Hi. I'm really new to the emulation in the 3DS XL(old), or anything about the 3DS in general. I've only ever used Gateway to play 3DS games on it, and I'm more familiar with PSP CFW.

I've obtained a n3DS XL and decided to use my old one for retro gaming. I have read up on a few topics, but there are so many that I just got confused. As the title says, I want to play GBA, GBC, GB, SNES, NDS, NES games, and others if possible like Sega (I don't know :c Is this a thing?) For what I understood, I can use MultiKernel with my Blue Gateway card to play *.nds *.gb *.gbc *.nes *.ipk and *.gba. But since I'll use the o3DS XL purely for retro gaming, would CFW be better? I'm leaning towards Luma3DS just because it apparently updates fast. I don't know.

Please help a hopeless noob.

NEStopia is great for NES ad FDS games.
I've never actually used that before. Most of my experiences with emulation on the 3DS have been subpar, so I just assumed emulation on the 3DS is still not usable. I'll test out NEStopia later.

Do note that the OP has a N3DS.

I'll be using the n3DS XL for 3DS games. The Old 3DS XL will be for retro gaming, so like GBA and stuffs.

I also just learn about injections. I don't even know what that is, and am reading it up at this very moment I'm typing this.

I wouldn't recommend Nestopia on O3DS/2DS, it'll be pretty dog slow. Stick with QuickNES (which, unfortunately, isn't that great).

Ahem, but yeah, CFW makes no difference for emulation, with one exception*.

*If you're going to use PCSX to play PS1 or Picodrive to play 32x with dynarec, you'll want to use Luma or some other CFW that adds "backdoor" back in for firmwares above 10.7, if you're not using a 10.2/10.4 firmware.bin. But since we're talking about O3DS here, it's not a huge concern.

Why? The N3DS is much better to use with emulators.

I didn't know this o.o My knowledge with 3DS is limited to Gateway, and even with Gateway, I have no idea what the A9LH is (according to the site), and I just play offline. I only ever boot into Gateway mode to play SMT and Fire Emblem.

But quick SNES only plays SNES games, right? I was hoping, if possible, for an all in 1 emulator, but if that's not available yet (I really don't know, sorry!) I'll read up on it.

Funny... no answer so far actually answers the original question. I use Luma3ds. It auto-patches twl_firm and agb_firm (as do other CFW's, but whatever). Using VC and NDS flashcarts beats out any emunlation. If you're really wondering about emulation though, CFW doesn't matter in the slightest.

Read up on A9LH.

Each emulator can (for the most part) only emulate one or two systems, yes.

That's not going to happen (thankfully.)

I appreciate you trying to help, but your tone of voice towards someone who is completely new and trying to learn is rather harsh and uncalled for.

Thank you. I'll read up more on Luma3DS and also on the MultiKernal stuff I found.

QuickNES is an NES emulator, not an SNES emulator, but no, there is no all in one emulator on the 3DS (technically RetroArch is with all of its cores, but on the 3DS version, it's not).

Thank you. Pardon the typo, I meant QuickNES ><

I'm sorry for being efficient with my advice, given so that you can educate yourself on the subject and (hopefully) don't end up needing to e spoon-fed information every time a perceived error in system function occurs.

There's a reason for the harsh tone; that being because you could've easily just found this out with google search, typing in your question and adding GBATemp to the search text. It's not terribly hard to do.

That being said though, you'd best use Retroarch's emulators on the N3DS if you wish to emulate most of the game consoles/handhelds you have listed here. NDS titles don't have an emulator yet for the 3DS but you can get a compatible flashcart to put NDS games on which will work.

And as stated above Luma3DS is the best CFW to work with.

Now I know what to do. You don't seem to understand just how new I am at this. I don't see how me asking my question would equal as me being e-spoon fed, given the many, many options and CFWs and their requirements. Heck, I don't even know why I have to add "GBATemp" since it'll limit me to one forum. With Gateway, it was easy for me and I knew what to read up on since I just wanted to play 3DS games with it. But since I wanted various game types on my o3DS now, and there being too many options, what's wrong with asking what I asked?

Back on topic. Thank you for recommending Retroarch. Checking up on it now.

It's exactly that you didn't know which is why members are crashing down on you. You may not think so but there's a certain degree of competence to be expected from here and newbies often don't quite understand that. Does that necessarily mean its their fault? Not quite but it's not really justified since you should before posting a thread read the Rules and Guidelines on the forum which is expected, so it's not hard to see why you're being treated as such; you were given a fair warning which wasn't heeded. Many other new members neglect reading this and so it also winds up making members here sour when the same question has been asked for the hundredth time in a day. It helps your case if you've made sure you looked up your question first before and then state as such in your topic since it at least shows you've done your research.

Anyway back on topic, I believe it would be best for you to try using A9LH to run Luma3DS in place of the gateway since it doesn't require a cart and only requires that you have a homebrew exploit installed already and you're under 11.0 to run those emulators. If not then disregard this sentence.

Who says I haven't done research? I did and found out about how the Blue Gateway doesn't support GBA, that rxtool is an option, how there's Sky3DS but that's not for me because I don't want to get another card, CitraAGB, and some pros and cons of various CFWs. Did I have to include everything in my first post? It's not like I was asking, "Guys, can I jailbreak my 3DS I'm on OFW xxxx" or "Should I use Gateway or Sky3DS or CFW".

But anyway. Thank you. Sorry for being new and not knowing everything in the 3DS homebrew/CFW/potato scene since 2011.
