So, I know that this sounds silly, but I'm wondering if there's any program that will allow me to copy my Wii discs that I've purchased through the years to an external hard drive and play them on my Wii. Thanks!

There are many ways to do this such as:
1)Waninkoko's dvd dump tool
2)Having a pc with a drive capable of reading wii discs and using a application like wiibackupmanager
3)dumping with usbloaders such as usbloader gx
4)dumping via network.
You can find any way to do this by searching.

1.) I could give it a go
2.) I'm building a PC soon, what optical drive should I buy for this?
3.) I can try
4.) My network sucks, so no

Also, how much storage does a game take up (GB)?

Hmm... to be honest I'm not sure if any games need the newest firmware. You could just proceed and update when you run into this situation.

Can I select a place to send the copy to (like can it dump to an external instead of an SD?)

Yes, you can. Most people use USB HDDs

Will 500GB be enough, do you think?
