So I made a post earlier about things not working out on 7.1 FW. So I was told to update to 9.2. But I'm nervous. This 3ds was a gift, and I really don't want to brick it. After my last 3ds got a broken SD slot, i'm nervous enough just ejecting the SD. (is it supposed to get caught on something inside? it never just comes straight out.)
I saw that if I get bricked, its permanent unless I had installed precaution stuff. But I don't know what I'm doing. I successfully updated my last 3ds to 9.2 and did everything correctly. But this time around I feel lost.
Any help on how to simply update without chance of bricking? I even looked for answers on here, but couldn't find any. I might be using the filters wrong.

Yeah updates for to 9.2 is the safest way to get auto boot menu hax emunand. Way safer than downgrades. The system was designed to "update" if you will. Going to a specific firmware for hax is very common, updates to 9.2 with the correct files is very safe.

What CFW are you using? You need to be in rxTools devmode/pastamode, PastaCFW, or some other CFW that does not have firmware spoofing.

Alright, here is a very good guide for updating, it practically holds your hand as you do it. Good luck.
https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/9.2.0-Update
Thanks!
I got to this step:

"Press down once to select FBI_inject_with_banner.app, then press A to inject"
It showed a screen where I had to enter a code to continue. I input the code, but even then it said the injection failed.
It didn't even give me a selection choice. I'm confused.

Maybe that's what it says if you didn't enter the button combination correctly? Press each button one at a time; at the bottom right of the screen, you will see a percentage increase whenever you press the correct button (20%, then 40%, etc.). After you enter it correctly, that's when you must press Dpad Down.

Thanks, it worked and I was able to install the sysupdate cia.
But I have a question. Since I was able to install a cia, does this mean I'm currently on EmuNAND mode? (I got here through pressing the dev option)
Cause I was wondering if I could update where I currently am to the latest FW?

Nooo! Please don't update there :P Devmode = SysNAND with signature patching (allows CIA installation/launching), but no firmware spoofing. If you update through system settings while in devmode, you will update your SysNAND to 11.0 and lose the ability to hack your 3DS.

Ooohh, thanks for warning me xD
Well, everything is done, but I have one more problem. When I load up my friends list, an error occurs and I'm booted back to the EmuNAND home. Any way to fix this? (I haven't tried installing cias yet. if I have any problems, I'll try downloading another version of said cia. if THAT fails, I'll ask for help. ) EDIT: I may need to do a system update. It finally loaded and informed me of that.

I'm panicking. 3ds showed a prompt to update while I was away doing chores. Someone pressed "Update" (while in EmuNAND) and now The SysNAND is updated to the latest FW... What do I do? Can I downgrade again?... I spent so much time on this, and I can't access Rxtools. help?

The proper way to update EmuNAND (without affecting SysNAND) is to update through System Settings.. Updating through the "update prompt" can result in updating SysNAND, which is what happened to you :/

The only thing you can do now is follow this guide (you will need a hardmod) to downgrade to a "franken-firmware", then you will need to follow one of the 10.7 downgrade tutorials to get back to 9.2 (you will need Cubic Ninja or Ocarina of Time + Powersaves device).

I can't carry that out. I'm missing one of the tools, and don't wanna tinker with the system. I think I should just wait for something to come out with 11.0 support. It may take a while, but its better than risking the 3ds. Thank you though.

Yeah, sorry about what happened. Next time try to keep your 3DS hidden to avoid this happening again!

GBAtempers correct me if im wrong but cant we use ctr-httpwn to bypass updating the 3ds entirely? Essentially we would never need to update 3ds to access online services?
