Faster load times in general
If they're emulating, better speeds
Pretty much any homebrew will run better
Longer battery life
Better 3D

It's pretty much just preference

I like the super stable 3D, but I'm one of those individuals who gets a headache with the 3D anyhow. I like that the amiibo support is built in, and that with Luma3DS you can make games run at a higher speed.

  • 804MHz CPU compared to 268MHz
  • N3DS CPU has 2MB of L2 cache, while the O3DS CPU has none, so applications can run better on the N3DS when it's enabled
  • 256MB RAM compared to 128MB (but only up to 178 is usable on the N3DS, and 80 on the O3DS)
  • Circle Pad Pro is built in via the C-stick, ZL, and ZR buttons (older games will see them as the CPP)
  • Faster wifi, and the Micro SD Management app to manage files on the SD card (though with CFW or *hax that's irrelevant since FTP works too)
  • N3DS-exclusive games like Xenoblade or Binding of Isaac, and SNES Virtual Console
  • Console doesn't reboot when playing Smash or MH4U, so NTR can stay active, for example
  • NTR CFW can video stream on N3DS, but not O3DS, alleviating the need for a capture card
  • Homebrew emulators run much better due to the faster CPU, especially NES and PS1
  • Better 3D (Super Stable 3D)
Those are all of the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Whether or not he wants to own one is preference. However, the N3DS is factually better in damn near every way. My biggest issue? The MSD slot UNDER THE BOTTOM COVER.

The MSD slot UNDER THE BOTTOM COVER.

It's annoying, but there are workarounds (none of them really pretty though):

  • Cut a hole in the removable battery cover/bottom lid where the uSD slot is so you can get to it whether it's on or off
  • Dremel out the screws on the battery cover so they're not there anymore, making it easier to take it off (I know you can leave it on unscrewed, but sometimes they get kind of stuck)
  • Get one of those weird uSD extension cables from AliExpress or whatever site had them, and have an easier to access uSD slot that sticks out of your console

I suppose one could also try removing the game card slot and relocating the uSD slot to there. No clue if your N3DS would still boot after that though. :P That, or relocate the uSD slot near the charging jack or somewhere else.

Nope. The system is too pretty to ruin like that. O.o

You're joking right? The current FTP app is at least twice as fast as Micro SD Management Tool

Well, I should have upgraded FTP a long time ago. >>

- Faster processor, meaning certain retail titles run faster (Super Smash Brothers).
- A couple of decent exclusives (Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, Binding of Isaac, and the official SNES Emulator on the eShop).
- Better 3D that's actually a lot more usable.
- Amiibo support if you have any games that take advantage of them.
- microSD Management comes built in, but this might be an invalid point since the original models can have it if you can install unofficial CIAs.
- Better build quality than the original small model I upgraded from. I skipped over the 3DS XL, so I can't really compare it.
- Best in terms of homebrew. Not only do we have NTR Video streaming, but Retroarch 3DS emulates a lot of systems quite nicely on the New 3DS with little to no hiccups. Compare this to the original models where only a couple of emulators run nicely with kernel access. You can also configure the New 3DS' extra horse power in Luma3DS (AuReiNAND) to always be enabled, which can actually make a lot of games run much more smoothly. For instance, Rayman 3D. There are some other nice homebrew titles that take advantage of the New 3DS' specs, so there's another nice benefit right there.

The only real downside is the somewhat inconvenient microSD card location. It's behind the backplate, and needs to be removed if you need to access it at any point. Assuming your friend is going to try to install arm9loaderhax, he'll have to remove this a couple of times if memory serves. Once he has a good setup though he should just be able to rely on microSD Management for his needs.

Don't forget about the terrible POWER button placement. Atleast with the non XL models it is tiny AF and is difficult to press, even with average sized fingers...

I'd say the super stable 3ds is definitely better than the o3ds. I like that you can actually fully turn it off (it "clicks" off instead of just sliding it down like on the o3ds). I think the n3ds looks way better and it feels better in my hands. The exchangeable cover plates are a nice bonus. It boots faster (with A9LH at least) and is generally faster. This all doesn't justify the €100 price gap between a secondhand o3ds and a secondhand n3ds though. I'd say; if you have the money go with the n3ds for sure. But if you don't.. I got my o3ds for €50. The price (and the very very unconvienient sd placing, but that's only necessary when you want to hack the device) is really the biggest drawback for the n3ds for me right now.

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Hope you've had a good morning.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

    How are you doing?

There's also this thing where I'm hyperfocused at night and cannot get to sleep.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    @Maximumbeans, I'm doing alright, thanks.

That must be rough. Productive I'm sure but hard to balance with daily life

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.

@Maximumbeans, I had a friend who had a glass chess set for their birthday.
