I couldn't tell you, I'm not sure if Vitas are updated by the factory but if you can get your hands on a 1000 model then you'll probably be in the green(Assuming you bought it brand new). You could try for a 2000 at a lower fw but you'll have to spoof an update to 3.51 if you wanted to assuming you managed to find one at <3.51.

psp 3000 or psp go have better colors then if that is what you are looking for and the system is somewhat cheap these days. Plus much easier to set up and much much more space you can have memory card wise over the ps vita.

You can also connect a psp 2000 model on up to a tv using component cables to play them on a bigger screen if you wanted to, won't have to worry about the colors then.

and what bothers me the most with these consoles is the absence of actual L2 R2 triggers which were important in 1995 when ps1 came out, thechnically the only handheld console who put those is N3DS but the engine is not powerful enough to think much about future emulation of slightly powerful consoles.
With the ps vita you can use the tough screen to emulate L+R2/L+R3 but its not the same, and does psp have a solution to that issue?

As far as i know the psp go model allows you to use a wireless ps3 controller through bluetooth though i am not sure if that allows L2/R2 button access. With the ps vita if you are willing to spend the money you can buy a L2/R2 controller grip which adds those buttons so it feels like you are using an actual playstation controller so that works for ps1 games as long as the ps1 games are ran in PS VITA MODE ONLY.

Running ps1 games in psp mode on a ps vita does not give access to L2/R2 touchscreen controls although you can use the left analog stick as L2/R2 buttons.

With a PSP Go some games have plugins for PS3 controller support but I'm not sure about emulators. The vita has these which the last time I checked were pretty pricey ($20-$30)

IMO it is worth buying but only if you plan on never taking the ps vita out of that grip. Play Asia sells them.

this might be an important reason for low sales, why make a handheld playstation if it has less features than the original controller that made it great

The controls are the best in a handheld when you go about it, the biggest problem is the overpriced proprietary memory cards that are also helping make the thing so damn hard to crack. Rejuvenate was a needle in a haystack no matter how you look at it.

It's so that it will be thinner and more lightweight and easy to carry. Not many people are willing to carry a heavy device just to play games.

Whether or not you take the time to modify the PS Vita for exploit awesomeness is how much good quality gaming with physical buttons means to you. Take it as someone who had the PSP-1000, PSP-2000, PSP-3000 and PCH-2000 (Vita Slim) there is a reason I chose the PS Vita PCH-1000 in the end, it's the build quality. Beautiful screen, comfortable controls, a nice little handheld regardless of how Sony didn't follow through on their promise.

The screens on all the others just didn't cut it, they all had problems (PSPs = 1000 too dark/motion blur, 2000 = too washed out and gamma cranked, 3000 = scanlines, Vita Slim = blackish grays and poor contrast ratio). Plus, there are a couple of titles on the Vita that are worth owning, such as Tearaway and Zen Pinball 2. Added to that you have TN-V for the PSP emulation (and the PSP emulation itself gives way to gPSP/ScummVM/PicoDrive), Rejuvenate for superior quality SNES/Genesis emulation via RetroArch and most recently TheFloW's PS1 Loader bubble hack there's a lot that can be done with it, plus I can use the PS3 Link to play Tokyo Jungle (a game that for my money works better on the Vita than it does on the PS3 itself) or as a cross-controller for Deus Ex: Human Revolution too.

So the conclusion I have is, it's a pain to hack but if handheld gaming is important to you that's the way to go. My main Vita is on 3.51 and it does everything I need it do, more or less, and it only cost £60 before factoring in memory cards and the odd PS Store purchase.
