Hardware Worth it to get a JPN N3DS?

I'm considering getting a Japanese N3DS so I can install CFW and region change it if necessary. But, I'd rather not have to deal with downgrading 10.7 firmware (oothax/ninjhax). I was wondering if anybody knew what the latest firmware Japanese N3DS are shipping with? Are they now shipping with 10.7? I've heard they don't go higher than 10.5 but cannot verify.

Why not just try to find a cheap 3DS in your region that's below the most recent firmware and downgrade it?

You can always just use hans or region change it as you've said.

Finding and importing a JP 3DS is going to be very expensive, mainly because of the postage and the sheer fact that for some odd reasons Nintendo consoles take years to lose their value in comparison to the west. Used NDS' still go for around $70 bucks or probably more in JP. It's quite extreme.

I suppose purchasing a J3DS would be great, if you could read Japanese. If not then I don't really understand why you'd pick a JP one over your own region's.. About $30 or more. Not too much of a difference, but region changing is only getting easier and the cheapest American option is the Happy Home Designer bundle and a lot of people prefer the black or white faceplates to the Animal Crossing ones.

I spent around $160 after shipping for an in box n3ds ll last year, if it helps. I can't remember the seller though.

Cheap, though I wouldn't worth risking the possibility of the firmware being 10.7+ (technically that shouldn't be possible though, since like you said, it should be on a firmware below 10.4)

Once you've changed your console's region will it revert back to its original if you ever updated it?

Keep two emunands, one with the jpn region, and another with whatever region you want. note that the converted region probably wont connect to the eshop without a private secureinfo_a (afaik at least, theres probably some workaround)

JPN New 3DS goes for around $160-70 online shipped to US so it's hardly cost-prohibitive, compared with the only one available in the US which is that silly Animal Crossing bundle ($220). Plus, I'd really like a black one and Nintendo has been slow on the uptake in bringing thesmaller N3DS models to the US.

The only catch is I don't want to end up with a 10.7 one but that sounds highly unlikely. Just want to make sure

That's actually not true. JPN games and consoles are relatively cheaper compared to American consoles. I've been buying N64 carts, GB games and DSLites on ebay from Japan and it's much, much cheaper than its American counterparts. I believe it's because of the sheer amount they produce over there to supply the demand for video games. Shipping doesn't add to the price either, not sure why. It might be a bit slower, but I've never had to pay more.

Really? I've had Japanese friends tell me that it's a lot more expensive to buy home consoles and such in Japan than it is in the UK. Strange.
