Hacking Is there a DNS or other method to block updates while still allowing eShop access?

my pc runs all day so i use my pc or android phone to create a hotspot, change the /etc/hosts file or use firewall to block update server, and let the wii u connect through the pc or phone's hotspot. never been happier
just downloaded pokken demo from eshop couple weeks ago and still safely at 5.3.2

That's some incredibly bad advice.
God awful, in fact. What if you forget to re-enable it? There's also the fact that it only takes minutes to download an update.

Anyway, when I get back home I'll give you the DNS server I myself use. I have it entered into my router, and I've got that nice red X.

EDIT: It allows for the eShop.

Just use 107.211.140.065 as a DNS to block every Nintendo server. And if you need to access the eshop, disable it and reenable it as soon as you can.

This is the worst advice I've seen in a long time.

You don't even need to be unblocked long enough to download the update, only long enough for your WiiU to decide to check for updates and make a DNS lookup.
Once the console has looked up the IP address, it doesn't matter if you re-block DNS.

Sweet, looking forward to it!

Kinda following the off-topic, but yesterday I disabled the TubeHax DNS (to download Lost Reavers on the eShop and update my games) and the YouTube app asked me to update it. I did it, and when it finished I enabled the TubeHax DNS again.
The eShop and the updates are blocked, as usual (I even get the download failed icon). But the YouTube app works! Maybe, with the update, they are using the direct IPs instead of urls?

Oh crap, I'm sorry. This has been "proven to not work". I have been using it as my primary DNS for some time now, but people have been calling foul, so I don't feel comfortable sharing it. You could probably find it, though....

Does it work for you though?
If it does, it should be fine, no?

Could you PM me it please? Thanks!

Confession: I've been using it, yes, but also the tubehax DNS (but I figured as a secondary DNS it wouldn't matter - it does).

I'll put it in this post, but I'm deadly serious, people have been recording updating out of the blue when using this (maybe there's a reason the eShop isn't blocked...). But as I said:

205.166.76.187

Use. At. Your. Own. RISK.

EDIT: Please look for a better alternative before using this! PLEASE!

What firmware are you currently on?
If on 5.4.0 or lower, how long have you used the DNS for? Since it would be great to still be able to use the eShop, but of course, I don't want my system updating itself when the next update is released :P

Where'd you get the DNS anyways?

I'm on 5.3.2, and I've been using this (primary) and the tubehax DNS (secondary) in my router for quite some time now. Let me test an update on my 3ds and give you the results (should block updates on the 3ds too).

EDIT: It's okay, I have A9LH. I'll survive!

Alright, thanks :P

Hmm, I'd probably use the DNS directly on my Wii U, and not my router :P
Since I'm not worried about my 3DS.

Yeah, you could do that, too!

RESULTS: "An error has occurred. Unable to update. The system will now be restarted."

Now removing the tubehax DNS to test for a change....

EDIT: All good. Wii U update failed!
