I just modded my N3DSXL using Plailect's guide (https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki) and was wondering about the effects of Nintendo FW updates (I'm new to this 3DS modding scene, please bear with me...)

Can future 3DS FW updates "patch out"/"break" the current A9LH/Aureinand from working? Or can we go ahead and update to latest FW's using system settings whenever new ones are released? I know that Nintendo tries to patch entrypoints (browserhax, etc) from working but can they break already installed CFWs as well?

There are some new games coming out later on (Zero Time Dilemma, anyone :D ) that I'd like to be able to play just in case they require firmware updates.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe nintendo can disable cfw from working, but I don't think they will do that.
And Zero Time Dilemma, I've been waiting for this game too

Thanks for the replies guys,

if I understand correctly A9LH is the hack which allows for full system access pretty much before anything else on boot up right? I believe I read as well that this would be hard for Nintendo to patch.

I guess I'm just still confused on Aureinand's relationship to A9LH - so Aureinand is CFW that is launched by A9LH? And as long as CFW cannot patch A9LH we can always launch CFW such as Aureinand?

So once we are able to launch Aureinand, Nintendo FW cannot patch Aureinand's functionality? And (sorry to make you explicitly spell this out), this means that we can pretty much update to any Nintendo FW later on without any ill-effects?

Thanks again. I'm just trying to get at least a slightly better understanding of what I'm doing :shy:

That's mostly correct. However, if Nintendo updates NATIVE_FIRM you'll probably need to download a new firmware.bin from the aureinand git.

Theoretically, it's possible that Nintendo will exploit their own arm9 kernel and remove a9lh, but it's extremely unlikely. Unless they do that, arm9loaderhax is here to stay.
They most likely won't do that. I think the closest Nintendo would do is release a hardware revision that blocks a9lhax. (Not that they're going to, considering the 3DS is reaching EOL soon).

According to the nerds, at this rate, it would require Nintendo to release completely new hardware or physically go to your house and re-flash a pre-A9LH NAND back onto your 3DS.
Now as of right now, there hasn't been update that's used a core passed 10.4, so we really don't know if that's completely true. So I say, don't just jump onto an update as soon as they are out, wait until they are tested before updating. But in theory, it should always be safe to update.

You're likely safe on A9LH, Nintendo would have to make quite the update to negate it's effects. However, as mentioned, it isn't impossible, just incredibly unlikely. At the end of the day, all it comes down to, is, if a new update comes out, just wait and find out from this site if the update is safe or not for A9LH, that's my intentions moving beyond 10.7 on A9LH.

I think we're a bit late in the life cycle of the 3DS to be worried about this now tbh. It has been available for over 4 years at this point and can only really have another 1-2 years left in it. I would be very surprised if they decide to pair the 3DS into the NX ecosystem rather than replace it with a new handheld. That would be taking the lateral thinking philosophy to its limits.
