There seems to be a really good video guide here:

I haven't done it yet because it involves a lot of updating and downgrading firmwares and seems like too much work :P.

The 2 big advantages for me are: no failboots, and easier to run gba injects.

The process seems to have a very, very low brick rate if your follow the instructions to the letter, but if you're new I would wait for something easier. It'll take hours if you've never done it before.

I've been following both guides. It seems that this one is an outdated video version of the one presented by rileysrjay ( https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Get-Started ). There are newer version of some tools, namely OTPHelper has a new one 'click' option that is safer than going one by one, with lots of extra validations.

Is it worth the risk doing a9lh with a new 3ds? Personally I think I'll just wait till it's safer.
That would be forever then. the New 3DS will always have more risk as it was never designed to run 2.1 nor any O3ds firmware (in fact 9.x O3DS and higher will brick the New 3DS if 2.1 is accidentally updated via cart or system settings)

right now, there is recourse to a partial 9.2 downgrade so at least get on 9.2 now or else you could end up on 10.8 (when it comes out) if you need to Safe Mode update out of a partial 9.2 downgrade.

I'm actually downgrading to 2.1.0 right now. There is a patch for 2.1.0 in otphelper that will make it work in sysnand on a new 3ds. It's worth the risk, considering you get 100% bootrate for emunand and you've "future proofed" you're 3ds.

good luck and make sure to follow the steps to the letter and you will be good. if you get stuck or have questions, feel free to make a thread here or PM myself or other members here.

Thanks. I'm using that video tutorial and the one I found and checking them with each other to make sure I don't screw up. They seem pretty simple. I'm currently in the process of making 2.1.0 work for new 3ds with otphelper.

YES!!! My downgrade worked. My 3ds is now on 2.1.0.

once you get your OTP, make sure to be very careful when following the steps after so you do not accidentally brick it after all the trouble of actually getting the OTP. post back once you have A9LH installed. if the video guide has you using Cakes instead of AuReiNAND or has you using CloudA9H instead of SafeA9LHinstaller, post back here and I (and others) will help you setup A9LH with SafeA9LH and AuReiNAND.

Wouldn't it be better and faster for him to just use the guide at that point?

probably, but the video guide and the OTP guide by @Plailect may not line up in a way that way allow smooth transition between the two and I would rather have questions asked here than to mess up and potentially brick.
True. Usually only one way to get a9lh installed, but I see where you're coming from.

Done it all too :D

Honestly is so much cleaner like this than the old stuff. I have to say I did crap my pants (figuratively) a few times during the process. And Jebbrs Crabst, that was long and painful. Worth it I think. Won't do it again in the near future...

I thought that after I did my first New 3DS, which is why I did 2 O3DS XL consoles via the unsafe method of directly downgrading to get OTP first. I had to follow the guide for the New 3DS and wow, what a long process, It was well worth it.

I ended up doing 2 more via proxy using the unsafe method by guiding a friend over steam chat half the world away. I do not think I will be doing any New 3DS OTP dumps anytime soon unless I really need to.
