I keep seeing people complaining about this.

I work in retail for almost 4 years now. I have nothing to complain. It's a job, my bills are paid monthly. What is so bad about it?

What are your thoughts? Are retail jobs bad or not?

I think it probably depends where you work. If you work somewhere where you are not just minimum wage scum that they have not invented a robot to do the job for yet then I imagine it is not fun at all, if you manage to find a place that might figure out a situation and where blame might be (or realise you will be back there tomorrow where the other has threatened to leave and not come back...), listen to ideas (assuming you are one inclined to have them), pays something reasonable, has reasonable hours and generally does well on the conditions front then you have probably woken up in magic fairy land and made a very boring wish but I suppose that would be OK.

The following sites provide many of the great list of reasons that retail will not be something I do if I can help it.

Then again most people providing content there are probably doing it as a stopgap or while they look for a "real" job rather than trying to make a go of it or something.

I work for Wal*Mart. As of right now, I've been a "manager in training," for over a year, which basically means I have all the power, responsibility, ect. that comes with being a manager. But do you know how much I am getting paid? $10.50 an hour. Do you know how much I should be making? 15$ an hour.
They are basically treating me like a manager and dumping manager work on me for over a year, but I am grossly underpaid. Of course if I say something (like I did once before,) they strip me of my power, then dump me back to Wireless.
I am also treated like shit by 90% of the management team because I am "in training."

It's a job for Teenagers or Young Adults who still live at home w/ parents, why would they pay you $15 an hour?

Working retail is not a job for Teenager, that's fast food. Having a store open 24/7 with 90% of the job requiring you to be 18+, means that hiring teens only hurts the store.
And Department managers make 15$ in our store.

That logic applies to Cashiers and burger flippers. If those in management aren't making at least $14, then I have to wonder why they keep those jobs..

For me? Working retail isn't an issue. It's the customers, mainly. Not to mention the amount of work I was required to do for what little pay I got. I worked at best buy, making $10 an hour to do managerial type work ON TOP of sales? Yeah...

I worked at WM in highschool. Was an ICS supervisor making 9.00hr. Could barely afford the gas to get back to work by the end of the pay period. Place is a soul crushing hell. But I dont care for retail anyway..

It depends on the environment. If you have a fair manager and decent coworkers, you'll have a far more enjoyable experience. Even then, sometimes customers are just dicks. I remember a person came in, wanting a refund on her mower she bought two years ago. We had a tough time explaining to her it was only for thirty days. That said, we also got plenty of decent customers as well.

Definitely this.

The grocery store I am employed at is fairly decent.

Retail you are often a verbal punching bag for the arrogant, idiotic, social welfare scum of the earth. People who have no control in their life like to make themselves feel big by insulting people they know can't argue back, simply because it is "their job" to take shit from the customer.

That's mostly true. I had a guy try to slap me because we didn't have cranberry sauce. So I punched him in the mouth. I didn't even get a writeup. I know it sounds made up, but I swear it happened. But my boss was witness to it.

I used to work at a local Wal-mart, and let me just say, that being their employee was complete rubbish. Needless to say I left right before I got my first real raise with them, because they made retail look so unsatisfying and the customers there were just baffling (l live on the east coast, rural country). However, I know that besides Wal-mart leaving a shitty name for retail jobs that there are decent and better-run retail locations.

But seriously I had to GTFO because I worked in meats... ewh. Now, I'm employed with a really good company as a technician, which is great, because working on huge machines is actually somewhat relative to my interests. Also @VinsCool if you're happy with where you work, I'm happy for you man.

Thanks mate :)

Yes my job is pretty good actually.
I'm the supervisor of the Frozen grocery section, and it's going pretty well.

I have all the available hours to take, cash is consistent, and I'm living in my apartement decently :)

Let's reverse that question.
How great is it working in retail?
I recently turned 16, and I wouldn't mind getting part time job (hey, I need a way to buy my games, lol).

Sweet deal dude, and frozen section is definitely one of the better areas to work imho. Nice place to escape to on those brutally hot days. And we barely had any manager traffic because they didn't care much for the cold lol.

Depends of the place I guess. It could be a bit stressful for newcomers.
A grocery store is a good start IMO.

I started there at 17. I'm soon to be 21, and it's going very well there. My place is set, my boss is proud of the job, and I'm the youngest older employees, in the order of task management :P

What are your thoughts? Are retail jobs bad or not?

I don't think so man honestly, what kind of store do you work in electronics/gaming? If you like your job nothing wrong with it IMO,I could see myself maybe working at a best buy for example.
